The Landfill Aftercare Team is an established team within the Resources and Waste Service responsible for the effective delivery of environmental monitoring and management of the County Council’s portfolio of historic closed landfill sites. This position provides an opportunity to continue to ensure that the authority’s legacy sites do not have a harmful effect on the environment or adverse effect on people or their ability to enjoy the county’s countryside.
You will primarily be involved in working with the Assets & Infrastructure Officer and a small team of Aftercare Technicians in delivering environmental monitoring and proactive management of all aspects of historic closed landfill sites, such as environmental monitoring, mechanical gas extraction systems and landfill leachate management and disposal. This is predominantly a field-based role with most time spent attending sites across the county for routine environmental monitoring, as well as maintenance tasks to both physical systems and grounds maintenance activities such as grass cutting. There is also desk-based work around data upload and interpretation, as well as administrative support across the various aspects required to fulfil the closed landfill aftercare team’s responsibilities. The role requires a full driving licence and for applicants to have their own method of transport to fulfil duties. It is a physically demanding role with a high proportion of lone working and work carried out in all weathers.
What you will be doing:
* Responsible for the site-based assessment and monitoring of existing facilities in respect of landfill gas migration and leachate control, including regular routine site visits.
* Assist with the management of landfill gas control systems, including planned maintenance tasks, grounds maintenance, analysis of results and data, and response to equipment failures. This may include liaising with contractors or supervision of small site works where required.
* Assist with the management and interpretation of environmental data, preparation of reports and contract documents.
* Assist with administrative tasks as required to fulfil the obligations of the team in general.
What skills and experience do I need to have
* BTEC Higher (Level 4) or equivalent qualification / experience in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Environmental Technology or similar. Relevant post-qualification experience will be accepted.
* Technical and practical problem-solving skills are highly advantageous.
* An enjoyment of working regularly outdoors in all weathers and undertaking a variety of physical or maintenance tasks.
* Skills and experience in relation to closed landfill aftercare, environmental monitoring, or similar areas of work where these skills are transferable.
