The Opportunity
We are looking for a Principal Network Design Consultant to join our Technology Consulting Team based in the Digital Services Portfolio. You will act as a subject‑matter expert and technical specialist on projects, taking a lead role in delivery and client interface.
Responsibilities
* Capture, develop and interpret client requirements and translate them into inputs for the network design process.
* Lead the network design development from concept through to construction.
* Review and approve network designs.
* Monitor on‑site deployments and witness testing of network installations.
* Develop Arup’s knowledge, skills and experience in data networking, including mentoring and developing colleagues.
* Contribute to scoping work and fee proposals for network‑design projects.
* Check and approve work in accordance with quality management systems.
Qualifications & Experience
* Expertise in network design and integration of networks within the built environment.
* Experience across sectors such as Transport, Property, Science, Technology, Healthcare and Sport.
* Working knowledge of switching and routing, industrial Ethernet, cabling integration, wireless technologies (802.11, Zigbee, LoRa, PON), data‑network offerings, equipment manufacturers, network loads, MPLS, LES, dark fibre, firewalls, IDS/IPS, VPNs, load balancers, IP telephony, VOIP, radio‑over‑IP.
* Understanding of network security and holistic cyber‑security across the built environment.
* Installation and commissioning on‑site experience.
* Capability to develop, review and undertake witness/testing processes and acceptance procedures.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences, including system diagrams and schematics.
* Self‑check and peer‑review ability.
* Knowledge of building contract processes and their impact on technology specifications and contracting.
Security clearance: BPSS clearance is required; candidates eligible for SC clearance are preferred.
Travel: Projects will be in the UK and abroad; willingness to travel as needed.
Professional Background
You should have relevant industry experience. A degree or professional qualification is not mandatory, but appropriate industry experience is expected.
