Are you a resilient, empathetic, and patient individual looking to support children who face significant barriers to learning? We are seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and forward-thinking school in Barnoldswick.
In this role, you aren't just "helping out" in a classroom; you are a mentor, a role model, and a steady presence for pupils (aged 11-16) who have complex social, emotional, and mental health needs. You will work alongside a Class Teacher and another TA to create a safe, calm, and successful learning environment.
A Day in the Life of an SEMH Teaching Assistant
08:30 - Team Briefing: Meet with your Teacher and fellow TA to discuss the day's plan and any specific emotional needs or "triggers" to watch out for.
08:45 - The Arrival: Welcome students as they arrive from Colne, Nelson, and Skipton. Your job is to spot who is struggling early and provide a "soft landing" into the school day.
09:30 - 1:1 Support: You'll sit with a specific student during Literacy, helping them break down tasks into manageable chunks and offering praise to keep their frustration levels low.
11:00 - Managing a "Wobble": A student becomes overwhelmed and needs to leave the room. You'll accompany them to a quiet space, using de-escalation techniques to help them regulate their emotions and return to class when ready.
12:30 - Building Bonds: Lunchtime isn't just a break; it's a chance to build rapport. Whether it's playing a game of pool or chatting about hobbies, this is where the most important relationships are formed.
14:00 - Practical Learning: You might lead a small group in a practical activity like gardening, sport, or cooking helping students develop social skills and teamwork.
15:15 - Team Debrief: Once the students head home, the team reflects on the day. You'll share success stories and prepare for a "fresh start" tomorrow morning.
Who We Are Looking For
The ability to remain calm and professional when faced with challenging behaviour.
Backgrounds in Youth Work, Sports Coaching, Care, or Military/Services are highly valued, as is previous school experience.
You must be able to forgive and forget, treating every day (and every hour) as a new beginning for the child.
Ideally, you will be based in or near Barnoldswick, Earby, Colne, or Nelson and understand the local community.
