Overview

We are looking for an experienced Endoscopy Health Care Assistant or an existing Health Care Assistant who wishes to change career and work in a specialist area with opportunities for development and a passion for learning Endoscopy. If you are looking to join an energetic and vibrant department that makes a difference to people’s lives, we would like to hear from you. Mentoring, training and guidance will be provided.

Join us on our journey of expansion at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital as we work toward accreditation through the Joint Advisory Group (JAG) on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy as a high-quality endoscopy service. Our focus is to ensure patients receive high-quality treatment quickly in clean, comfortable surroundings. You will be part of a friendly Multidisciplinary Endoscopy Team.

Overview of our Endoscopy service: base across two sites, with Ormskirk as the high-volume centre. We work with Medical and Surgical Teams to provide a seamless patient journey.


Main duties and responsibilities

* Work as part of a team; duties will be delegated by the registered healthcare professional.
* Act within your training and competence; know who to ask for help if unsure.
* Follow agreed ways of working, Trust standards, policies and protocols.
* Communicate compassionately and effectively with patients, families, carers and health care practitioners; maintain confidentiality and demonstrate tact, empathy and reassurance.
* Observe, assess and respond to patients’ needs; escalate concerns to nursing staff and initiate emergency procedures as required.
* Organise self and supervise junior staff or learners in general tasks or when delivering patient care, with supervision from nursing staff.
* Prioritise delegated clinical care duties; perform personal care and activities of daily living with person-centred care.
* Assist registered healthcare practitioners with clinical tasks; follow care plans; report changes; assist with risk assessments; obtain samples where appropriate.
* Safely deliver care duties including patient equipment handling (hoists, wheelchairs).
* Gather evidence to assist in obtaining patient history; undertake delegated procedures within training limits (e.g., venepuncture, ECG, blood glucose monitoring, clinical observations, taking specimens) and escalate abnormalities to the registered nurse.
* Support feeding, nutrition and hydration; record intake and output and report changes to nursing staff.
* Maintain patient property per Trust policy; monitor supplies and order as needed.
* Mentor and support new starters and learners; participate in audits, surveys and development activities.
* Work in line with Trust policies and procedures; contribute to a safe, healthy working environment; uphold duty of care and act in the best interests of individuals.
* Work in partnership with individuals, carers/families and the wider healthcare team; participate in team handovers.


Qualifications and experience

Essential

* NVQ level 3 Health and Social Care or equivalent
* Care Certificate (equivalent to level 1)
* Literacy and numeracy functional skills level 2 or equivalent

Knowledge & Experience

* Knowledge of personal care and related procedures
* Demonstrable experience in a patient care/health-related role
* Knowledge of relevant healthcare legislation
* Experience of working in a team

Skills

* Effective verbal and written communication
* Good interpersonal skills; works well in a team
* Experience supporting junior staff and learners
* Ability to accept direction, be flexible with working hours and manage workload
* Resilience under pressure; inclusive, non-judgmental and reliable
* Basic IT skills

Other

* Frequent moderate physical effort; manual handling and personal care tasks
* Concentration, record-keeping and time-critical tasks
* Awareness of distressing situations and need for staff wellbeing support
* Daily exposure to various clinical situations including end-of-life care as applicable
* Able to carry out direct clinical care as required on ward/department
* Potential exposure to blood or body fluids
