Non-Stipendiary Research Fellowship in Physical, Mathematical, or Engineering Sciences

King's College wishes to appoint, with effect from 1st October 2025, one Non-Stipendiary Research Fellow in any area of the Physical, Mathematical, or Engineering Sciences.

Graduates of any university are eligible.

Candidates must have external funding support for their salary for at least two years from 1st October 2025. The source of external funding, its duration, and amount must be stated in the application. Funding sources include, but are not restricted to, research appointments from the Royal Society, the Research Councils of the UK, the Leverhulme Trust, and the Wellcome Trust. The fellowship lasts for up to four years or until the externally funded position at Cambridge ends—whichever is sooner.

The main purpose of these fellowships is to support researchers with secured external funding at Cambridge, allowing participation in college life and access to fellowship benefits.

Research Fellows are members of the Governing Body with full privileges. They are expected to live in or near Cambridge and engage actively in college activities.

Privileges include all meals, limited financial support for research expenses, potential access to an office, subsidised accommodation, or an additional living-out allowance of up to £4,000, depending on income.

While primarily research posts, Fellows are encouraged to undertake some university or college teaching, with additional pay for undergraduate teaching. More information can be found on the college website.

Fellows are expected to participate in college social and academic events, including attending meals, giving research talks, and engaging with students and faculty.

Important Dates

The closing date for applications is 9am on Wednesday 21st May 2025. Late applications will not be considered.

Longlisted candidates will be notified in late May to mid-June.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview on 16th July 2025. Candidates must be available on this date.

The fellowship begins on 1 October 2025 and ends on 30 September 2029, or earlier if external funding ends.

Application Process

Applicants should apply via the College's CASC application website and upload a PDF including:

* A CV (max three A4 pages)
* A research proposal (max 1,500 words)
* A writing sample (e.g., a thesis chapter or up to three published papers), with a statement of contribution if multi-author

Three references must be uploaded by referees in PDF format. Applicants are responsible for ensuring references are submitted on time.

If longlisted, applicants must provide a short departmental letter confirming funding and facilities.

Referees will receive an email link to upload references; alternative submission via email is possible by contacting the administrator.

All materials must be in English. The application will only be considered once complete, including references.

For questions, contact Dr. Caro Schader at research@kings.cam.ac.uk.

King’s College is committed to equal opportunities and data protection policies.
