Understanding the technology of materials and their related use and manufacturing processes is key to ensuring our products meet demanding technical, cost, and reliability requirements.
The Material team is a federated UK/Fr integrated team within Mechanical Engineering, operating with a common process set and links to other materials teams across the business. We have a wide range of test facilities and specialist knowledge in materials used across the business.
The Materials group supports all areas of the business in matters related to materials and processes, with expertise in metallic, non-metallic, composite, and other materials science areas.
The Role:
What will you be doing as a Materials and Process Laboratory Engineer?
* Providing technical guidance and approval in the selection, characterization, and use of materials and related processes across all projects.
* Offering consultancy on materials and processes for the Government and MoD.
* Representing the company on international, government, MoD, trade body, strategic steering bodies, and standard committees.
* Supporting compliance with REACH and RoHS regulations.
* Being the first point of contact for failure investigations and forensic engineering.
* Guiding the use and control of hazardous materials.
* Providing solutions for obsolescence issues.
* Undertaking technical assessments and validation of supplier/sub-contractor processes and manufactured parts.
* Providing technical support for in-country (offset) design and manufacturing.
* Conducting quality assessments of bought-in items.
Candidate Profile:
What are we looking for in our next Materials and Process Laboratory Engineer?
* Experience assessing a wide range of materials, including metals, paints, adhesives, composites, and related processes. Familiarity with general lab equipment is required; experience with XRF, FTIR, SEM, and EDX is beneficial but not essential. A strong background in materials chemistry is desirable.
* Ability to prepare reports, interpret engineering drawings and specifications, and use IT systems such as Word, Excel, and Access.
* Supporting failure investigations, materials selection, supply chain support, first article inspection report reviews, material inspection and characterization, among other activities.
* Supporting compliance data generation or assessment, such as REACh, RoHS, or environmental aspects of engineering designs.
Required Skills and Experience:
* Experience in manufacturing laboratories.
* Assessment of materials and components to international standards including DEF STANs.
* Supporting the selection, procurement, and manufacture of engineering parts or components.
* Knowledge of non-metallic material production and processing, including paints and adhesives.
