Senior Nutrition Fellow

The role is a full-time Senior Clinical Fellow in Nutrition and Intestinal Failure. It is an exciting training post within a large Integrated Intestinal Failure centre, commissioned to provide Type 2 and 3 IF care to patients from a wide area of Southern England. The post can be tailored to your training needs and focuses on inpatient and outpatient management of patients requiring enteral and parenteral nutrition support.

We are recruiting for two posts: a 6-month fixed term starting ASAP and a 12-month fixed term starting in September.

This post can be tailored to suit an interested doctor prior to gastroenterology training, as an out-of-programme experience during training, or post-CCT.

The UHS gastroenterology department is a large, busy, academic tertiary referral centre for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Intestinal Failure, neuro-gastroenterology and complex endoscopy. The Nutrition Team consists of specialist nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, 4 Consultant Gastroenterologists and 3 Intestinal Failure Surgeons.


Job Responsibilities

* Key member of the multidisciplinary team, involved in inpatient and outpatient care of patients requiring intravenous nutrition and hydration support including type 2 and 3 Intestinal Failure.
* Provide experience in complex tertiary gastroenterology.
* Opportunity to be involved in other subspecialties of gastroenterology, such as neuro-gastroenterology or endoscopy, according to your interests.

Additional Information

* Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows.
* Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.
* Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and a named educational supervisor will be assigned at the start of the post.
* Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust.
* Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, enhanced pay) applies.
* Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills.
* Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5:
o Minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
o Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g. FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
o Portfolio of evidence demonstrating criteria for progression in line with Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee
* Proposed interview date: TBC


Qualifications, Training & Experience

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* GMC registration with a licence to practise
* Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
* Completion of core medical training
* MRCP (UK) or equivalent
* At least four years medical experience since qualification
* Experience in Gastroenterology and General Medicine with exposure to other medical specialties
* ALS certificate
* At least 6 months attached to a Gastroenterology team
* ST5 level or above in gastroenterology training
* Experience of working in Nutrition and Intestinal Failure and transplant
* Evidence of interest in Clinical nutrition and Intestinal failure
* Training courses
* Professional meetings attended

* Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams
* Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
* Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
* Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
* Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and respond efficiently to various rapidly changing circumstances
* Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
* Understanding of audit
