The role
The Environmental Sustainability and Compliance Manager plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of our University’s commitment to sustainability and compliance. This dynamic position combines strategic vision with practical action, driving the development and continuous enhancement of our environmental sustainability initiatives.
By integrating sustainability into every aspect of our operations—education, research, capital projects, and beyond—this role ensures that we not only meet but exceed global standards, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals. With a focus on fostering strong stakeholder engagement, the manager will work to align our efforts with the ambitious goals of the University’s 2035 strategy, championing a greener, more sustainable campus for all. Maintaining and enhancing the University's certified Environmental Management System (EMS) and ensuring legislative compliance, key duties are structured across five main areas:
* Environmental Compliance & EMS Management
* Sustainability Strategy Delivery
* Stakeholder Engagement & Behaviour Change
* Reporting, Monitoring & Communications
Seeking a qualified candidate with a degree or postgraduate qualification in Environmental Management, Sustainability, or a related discipline, the ideal applicant will have extensive experience in environmental compliance management and a strong track record of implementing Environmental Management Systems (EMS) within complex organisations.
Key requirements include
* ISO 14001 or EcoCampus Lead Auditor certification (or a willingness to obtain it within the first year)
* Professional membership with an environmental body (e.g., IEMA)
* Proven experience in developing and delivering impactful sustainability strategies and policies
* In-depth knowledge of UK environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks.
Candidates should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage stakeholders at all levels, along with strong analytical and reporting abilities. The role demands a self‑motivated and organised individual capable of managing multiple workstreams and meeting deadlines.
Based at our Headington campus, you’ll experience the vibrant campus atmosphere and benefit from our modern office environment. The campus is one mile from the centre of Oxford and is served by regular public transport.
