Position Overview

West Midlands Police (Birmingham, England) is seeking an Infrastructure Services Analyst to support the IT & Digital department's Service Management function. The role will report directly to the Infrastructure Services Team Manager and will be responsible for ensuring the security, capability, availability and performance of the force’s software infrastructure, application delivery platforms, server infrastructure, database infrastructure, storage infrastructure and backup & recovery infrastructure.

This position requires technical expertise across a broad range of infrastructure technologies, including VMware, Veritas, SQL, Microsoft Office 365, Azure Stack, and many others. The analyst will work independently, make decisions using initiative, and represent the force at local and regional meetings.


Key Responsibilities

* Provide technical skills and knowledge that facilitate the security, integrity, availability and performance of the Force’s infrastructure software, data centres, data storage services, servers and backups.
* Ensure the integrity of the Force’s directory services infrastructure (e.g. Active Directory, PKI).
* Participate in incident, configuration, availability, capacity, continuity and release management in line with the ITIL framework.
* Provide specialist and technical advice on departmental issues and exercise judgment to resolve unclear situations.
* Represent the force at local and regional meetings as required.
* Maintain regular contact with internal and external stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes.
* Provide technical assistance to complex and significant projects and coordinate assigned services to meet quality levels.
* Interpret statistical data and advise management on trends.
* Support authentication and directory technologies, application and content delivery, enterprise desktop and mobile device configuration, data centre management, server technology, storage technology, database technology and backup/recovery technology.
* Champion good ideas and promote the Force’s diversity agenda.


Experience

* Support for Infrastructure Software Services Technology focusing on VMware, Veritas, SQL.
* Support for Data Centre Services Technology.
* Experience supporting Microsoft Office 365, Teams, OneDrive at Enterprise level.
* Experience with Cloud Security Products such as Defender and ATP.
* Experience supporting Windows technologies including Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS.
* Direct communication with senior managers from a customer service perspective.
* Create and maintain technical documentation to high standards and participate in meetings.
* Promote equality, diversity and human rights in working practices.
* Maintain information security standards.


Knowledge / Desirable

* Knowledge of infrastructure software technology.
* Knowledge of server, storage and database technology (VMware, Veritas, SQL).
* Knowledge of cloud technologies such as Azure Stack, Sentinel, Backups.
* Understanding of ITIL and change management processes.
* Knowledge of health and safety issues relevant to the post.
* Knowledge of internal financial processes.
* Technical support skills across a breadth of data centre and infrastructure technology.
* Strong interpersonal, presentation and communication skills.
* Flexibility to use supporting technologies and innovate.
* Ability to work under pressure and balance competing demands.
* Proven track record in understanding customer needs.
* Excellent organisational skills.
* Ability to produce management reports, policy documents and comprehensive working papers with recommendations.


Application Requirements

Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Management Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing their role, including full background and financial disclosure.

Medical: Appointment to this role will depend upon successful medical checks, which may include a drugs test.

Hours / Office Working: Full‑time position with core hours 08:00‑16:00, Monday to Friday. The role is agile but the successful candidate is expected to attend the office three times per week.
