Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine

The closing date is 10 June 2026

Due to retirement from critical care, we are excited to expand our intensive care consultant team. The post requires a dual CCT with either emergency medicine or anaesthesia. Job plans will differ depending on the background of the successful applicant. The indicative job plan is based on 10 PAs (of which 8.5 DCC).

Please ensure you read the Person Specification before applying.

Main duties of the job

The posts will be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital, but you will work (including out of hours) both on this site and in South Tyneside District Hospital. As well as the clinical aspects of the role, you will be expected to be active in non‑clinical areas, particularly in research and education. We are a cohesive and productive team; a track record of successful professional relationships and positive feedback is highly valued. Further detail about the post and indicative job plans can be found in the job description.

Job responsibilities

Critical care is delivered in two integrated critical care units within the Trust (Sunderland Royal Hospital 18 beds approx. 1200 admissions p.a., South Tyneside District Hospital 6 beds approx. 300 admissions p.a.) and the postholder would work across both units. Practices are aligned in both areas, and there is a shared IT system.

Strengths of the critical care service include:

* A motivated, friendly, cohesive team that always puts patients and their loved ones first.
* A closed unit with true multidisciplinary working and excellent relationships around the hospital, with a consultant microbiologist, pharmacist and dietician on every ward round.
* Investment in research and evidence‑based practice. The department exceeds recruitment targets by ensuring the whole team is on board and truly believing in the benefits research can bring. We work closely with our local and national research networks.
* A varied, busy workload with constant clinical challenge.
* A department that supports career development and progression.
* The first to deliver a 24/7/365 outreach service.
* Opportunity to be involved with undergraduate education; we are an educational provider for the Universities of Sunderland and Newcastle medical schools.
* All patients are cared for in single rooms in state‑of‑the‑art facilities designed by clinicians. Sunderland ICCU opened in 2014, and South Tyneside in early 2023.
