Job overview
An exciting opportunity for a suitably experienced, accredited & registered Clinical Perfusion Scientist to join the Sussex Cardiac Centre team.
We provide all perfusion services for adult cardiac surgery in a friendly, team-driven environment.
Candidates must hold current valid accreditation & registration with SCPS/CCPS.
Flexible working considerations are welcomed. The department currently operates a 4-day week (07:30 - 17:30), which is under review.
Main duties of the job
As an experienced, accredited, and registered autonomous practitioner, you will provide clinical perfusion services for adult cardiac surgery, managing the extracorporeal circuit during procedures. Duties include managing circulatory support devices, blood conservation equipment, working as part of a multidisciplinary team, and participating in a 24-hour on-call service.
The Sussex Cardiac Centre has a successful MICS program and is developing a complex aortic service. Experience with Spectrum Quantum HLM’s is advantageous but full training will be provided.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Review patient notes and make clinical decisions regarding extracorporeal support.
* Assemble, prime, de-air, and manage extracorporeal devices.
* Assess and interpret complex clinical information, taking autonomous action.
* Maintain homeostasis during cardiopulmonary bypass.
* Work independently managing techniques during procedures.
* Perform myocardial preservation techniques and manage specialized perfusion procedures.
* Assist with setting up and managing long-term extracorporeal circulation techniques.
* Seek advice and apply knowledge for complex cases.
* Administer drugs and fluids per departmental protocols.
* Transfuse red blood cells guided by policy.
* Operate under pressure in emergency situations.
* Support and supervise trainee perfusionists.
* Provide support in other clinical areas.
* Prepare equipment for autologous cell salvage and intra-aortic balloon procedures.
* Maintain patient dignity, especially in emergencies or patient death.
* Perform daily maintenance and troubleshooting of blood-gas analyzers.
* Participate in 24-hour on-call cover for cardiac surgery.
