We are recruiting a part-time qualified practitioner in the Counselling profession to work in our hospice. You will be part of a well-established growing counselling service with a forward-thinking approach to holistic health care. You will join our Family & Individual Support Services Team offering one-to-one, telephone, and online therapy, working with individuals diagnosed with a palliative condition, and their loved ones.

Job posted: 27 August 2025. Location: St. Francis Hospice, Havering-atte-Bower, Romford RM41QH. Salary: £36,971 to £43,792 per year (actual pro rata £22,182 - £26,275). Contract: Permanent. Working pattern: Part-time. Reference: B0483-246.

Job Description

Job responsibilities and main duties include working with the hospice MDT to provide specialist psychological assessments of people with palliative care needs, supporting education and supervision, and contributing to the Family & Individual Support Services team.


Responsibilities

* Work with the Ward, Pemberton Place and Community individuals to provide specialist psychological assessments as per job summary.
* Support carers, relatives, and significant others through direct and indirect methods.
* Implement a range of psychological interventions for individuals, couples, carers, families, and groups within palliative care.
* Provide specialist psychological advice, guidance, and consultation to other professionals.
* Participate in teaching, training, and education for the MDT on psychosocial aspects of terminal illness experience.
* Receive regular supervision from an appropriately trained and senior counsellor; engage in CPD activities.
* Attend hospice meetings as required and undertake data entry with appropriate confidentiality.
* Maintain high standards of clinical record keeping and stay updated on legislation and policies related to client groups and mental health.
* Provide information materials and support across services; participate as a member of the Family & Individual Support Services team.
* Undertake other appropriate tasks as agreed with the Family & Individual Support Services Manager.


Hospice-wide

* Participate as a member of the MDT in delivering specialist therapeutic interventions to individuals with palliative or end-of-life care needs, bereaved relatives, and carers.
* Attend MDT and staff meetings; share information to support care of individuals and loved ones.
* Work with hospice teams to identify those at risk in bereavement and provide 1-2-1 counselling as needed.
* Support Quality and Care HoDs in reflective practice sessions; collect and report statistics for the Psychology service when required.
* Complete Safeguarding training as part of the Safeguarding Leads team.


Volunteers

* Advise and coordinate voluntary input into the Bereavement Service; support recruitment and induction of Volunteer Bereavement Counsellors.
* Provide supervision and training support to volunteers.


Education

* Participate in hospice champion work streams; lead and participate in clinical audit and education forums.
* Support learning environments and contribute to the Saint Francis Hospice education programme.
* Provide education to students and staff on psychosocial issues within the hospice.


Professional

* Adhere to the Ethical Framework for good practice in counselling and psychotherapy (BACP/BPS) and participate in external supervision.
* Provide supervision to volunteer counsellors as per BACP guidelines; comply with hospice policies on sickness, absence, conduct, Health and Safety, and Data Protection.
* Maintain professional development and stay informed about developments in psychosocial care in palliative settings; promote multi-professional teamwork.


Other Requirements

* Respect confidentiality and manage data in line with the Data Protection Act.
* Travel to various locations within the hospice catchment area; must have or be able to obtain business-use vehicle insurance.
* UK Right to Work required; no sponsorship available.


Qualifications

* Essential: Degree and professional qualification in counselling/psychology, or equivalent experience; accreditation with a counselling profession (BPS, BACP, etc); evidence of CPD; Diploma in Supervision or equivalent.
* Desirable: Training in palliative care and bereavement.


Experience

* Essential: Significant experience as a counsellor in specialist palliative care; experience using a range of psychological techniques; ability to communicate complex issues to individuals, carers, and professionals; autonomous and MDT work; experience in supervision.
* Desirable: Experience with death and bereavement work; leading groups; knowledge of CQC requirements.


Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

* Excellent written and verbal communication; strong IT skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, databases); strong interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and in a team; time management and confidentiality; resilience in managing emotional distress; commitment to hospice values (Compassionate, Collaborative, Creative).
* Desirable: Knowledge of best practices in psychological therapies, bereavement, and palliative care.
