Overview
The Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) National Quality Assurance (QA) Service is an expert advisory service that supports the principles of medicines optimisation by developing best practice and ensuring continuous improvement through the implementation of quality risk management systems in NHS medicines manufacturing, preparation and supply‑chain management. The SPS QA function provides specialist advice on the quality of medicines to NHS pharmacy professionals to support safe patient care.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage a regional QA team, delivering the QA service across the region.
* Provide specialist leadership and QA advice at national, regional and local levels, supporting the national medicines optimisation agenda.
* Advise on the safety of medicine preparation, manufacture and distribution for both licensed and unlicensed activities.
* Develop, implement and mentor compliance with quality standards for the safe use of medicines.
* Provide high‑complexity QA advice on specialist topics to NHS organisations and networks.
* Develop best‑practice guidance and web‑based resources for QA of medicines in the NHS.
* Lead audit programmes of NHS aseptic units regionally, providing oversight of high‑risk units.
* Support procurement and national and regional contracting of medicines.
* Provide oversight of medical gas systems in NHS organisations.
* Engage with the Defective Medicines Report Centre to notify the system of problems and support drug/device recalls.
* Contribute to research, innovation and service development.
* Formulate, direct and deliver strategic plans for QA services to acute NHS trusts and support the region’s Chief Pharmacist network.
* Contribute to the development, implementation and delivery of work‑plans for the NHS England, SPS and NHS Pharmaceutical QA Committee.
