Our temporary accommodation team support people in temporary accommodation, and help them to move on to somewhere more permanent, we also support people living on 3 traveller sites in York. This role will focus on work with customers in temporary accommodation.
Skills
As a support worker you will help to identify the support needs of customers, to help them to learn or re-learn the skills to move on and to remain in accommodation once they are in somewhere more permanent. Your role as a support worker will include:
Assisting customers with their planning and preparation for moving on to more permanent accommodation
Managing rent accounts and any rent arrears
Assisting customers to gain essential skills such as cooking, budgeting, IT literacy through effective in-house activities
Maintaining accurate hostel records and customer files
Assisting customers with their claims for housing and associated benefits
Responding to and managing any incidents at the hostel appropriately
Ensuring housekeeping and cleaning tasks are regularly carried out at the hostel
Helping customers to access services such as health, education, or employment support.
This is a challenging and rewarding role which includes working with those who have come from a range of different backgrounds, and who may have experienced previous homelessness, addiction, mental ill-health or involvement with the criminal justice system.
There is a generous benefit package, for holidays and pension, and in addition to the basic rate of pay (above) there are also enhancements for shift working, and weekend working.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C1: Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously, almost effortlessly. Only a conceptually difficult subject can hinder a natural, smooth flow of language.

Hybrid working arrangements are available for this role. Each role at CYC is different and your working arrangements will be determined based on the requirements of the role and in collaboration with you and your needs as part of the recruitment process. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.
The duties of this post require the postholder to undertake a basic Criminal Record check (unspent convictions only) via the Disclosure and Barring Service.
