Maternity Nursery Nurse

The post holder will enhance and engender a philosophy of care founded on the recognition and promotion of normality within neonatal care. They will provide health education, support, and advice to women, birthing people and their families who are having or have recently birthed a newborn.
They will work in partnership with the woman/birthing person and their family in co‑ordinating their newborn's care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to develop, implement and evaluate health promotion programmes in line with best practice for our families.
Proactively contribute to the support and development of new and junior colleagues within the multidisciplinary team regarding immediate neonatal care.
Main duties of the job
* Act as an ambassador in the specialism of low-risk neonatal care.
* Following Trust defined training and appropriate competency assessment, undertake clinical observations of the neonate as per NICE guidance and BAPM standards, including:
o Heart rate and respiratory rate assessment
o Temperature monitoring
o ECG
o Blood testing
o TCB assessment
o Use of phototherapy lights, bili‑blankets, hot cots, radiant heaters and neonatal resuscitation equipment.
* Work in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team including paediatric doctors, neonatal team, midwives, nurses, audiologists, general practitioners, safeguarding services and other relevant agencies.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* BTEC National Diploma in nursery nursing/childcare OR NVQ Level 3 in Early years OR Equivalent
* GCSEs English and Maths grade C or above
* ECDL or other relevant IT qualification
* Evidence of completion of BFI accredited breastfeeding training course
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience working within the NHS environment
* Experience caring for neonates/infants
* Experience working in maternity or neonatal services
* Training in completion of neonatal observations
Skills and Knowledge
* Excellent communicator with both service users and the public, and the multi-disciplinary team
* Good level of computer literacy
* Ability to use own initiative
* Ability to adapt to different situations
* Ability to support safeguarding of neonates and families in vulnerable situations
* Aptitude for managing highly emotional situations, e.g. adverse neonatal outcomes, removal of a child by social services
* Must be kind and caring, approachable and sensitive to parental concerns, advocate and provide reassurance with empathy and excellent listening skills
* Be self‑motivated and driven to learn and adapt to changes in clinical practice
