Job overview

To work as a team leader and deputise for the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in line with the nursing framework and in accordance with the nursing philosophy of Ashford and St Peter’s NHS Trust.

To be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

To promote and help to manage delivery of a quality nursing service, setting and monitoring clinical standards.

We are looking for band 6 Deputy Sister / Charge Nurse to help drive through improvement and service redesign. We are looking for staff to join us who are enthusiastic, hardworking, dedicated and have a passion for delivering the best care to all our patients. We are a dynamic, friendly and supportive team rising to the challenges and hard work required in achieving our Clinical Quality Indictors.

We are looking for a Band 6 with an interest in elderly care, ideally with a minimum of 18 months post registration experience at Senior Band 5 or equivalent. Experience in the use of extended roles would be an advantage. Working with the multi-disciplinary team, you will need to have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to motivate and manage, adapting, driving and leading rapidly changing situations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST:

Clinical

Be responsible for the provision of a safe and high standard of nursing care, based on a nursing model and incorporating proven nursing research, which reflects the overall aim of the Emergency Department philosophy. Implement the hospital’s policies and current relevant legislation as set out in the Clinical and Administrative Procedure books, complying with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, ensuring all staff understand the relevance to clinical practice. Assist the Sister/Charge Nurse in providing and developing good nursing practice ensuring that said practices are in accordance with department and hospital policy. Assist in the establishment, monitoring and evaluation of agreed standards of patient care and quality service. Determine nursing priorities, planning patient care according to the skill mix of staff. Interpret the significance of the patient’s clinical observations and records, making decisions and planning in areas affecting patient care; reports promptly to medical or appropriate staff any matters which fall outside his/her responsibility. Investigate and reports on all aspects of patient management, including accidents and complaints, in line with hospital policy. Monitor clerical and legal documents completed by ward staff, ensuring they are accurate and legible. Assist with any approved clinical research programme and in the assessment of new equipment and technology

Leadership

In conjunction with the Sister/Charge Nurse is responsible for effective organisation of the department. Ensure the safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with established procedure and the law. Ensure the safe use of equipment, ascertaining that staff understand how to operate the equipment are competent to do so and that the equipment is in safe working order. Understand the implications of the Health and Safety at Work Act, and maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff according to the hospital’s Health and Safety Policy. Report and records accidents/incidents and complaints to the Sister/Charge Nurse, according to the agreed policy and undertake further investigations as directed. Be competent in current emergency resuscitation techniques, both in theory and practice. Have a working knowledge of the fire regulations and procedures, ensuring appropriate action is taken in response to an emergency. In conjunction with the Sister/Charge Nurse, maintain budgetary control through an efficient and effective use of resources. Attend meetings and participate in working parties when required, developing effective links with colleagues for obtaining and giving information.

Undertake projects and initiate improvements in nursing care on the ward.

Education

In conjunction with the Sister/Charge Nurse, maintain a suitable learning environment for all grades of staff. Ensure that trained staff understand the educational objectives of all grades of staff, acting as a mentor to appropriate staff and assessing their performance. Encourage trained staff to undertake professional development, ensuring attendance at mandatory updating, as laid down by the Trust. Promote and provides health education for patients and their carers.

Maintain and enhances own knowledge through continuing education and training activities. Take part in an individual performance review, reviewing personal development and performance in consultation with line manager.

Management

Contribute to the recruitment and selection process. Conduct regular risk assessments and health and safety audits, action plan and achieve targets.
