Purpose of the Job
The Nursery Nurse will be working as part of a key worker team for the daily needs of children between the ages of birth to five years and to give support to other personnel within the setting.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To operate a programme of activities suitable to the age range of children in your area in conjunction with other staff.
2. To support all staff and engage in a good staff team.
3. To work with parents/carers of special needs children to give full integration in the setting.
4. To keep a proper record of achievement file on your key children for parents/carers.
5. To liaise and support parents/carers and other family members.
6. To be involved with in and out of working hours activities e.g. training, monthly staff meetings, fundraising activities etc.
7. To be flexible within working practices of the setting.
8. To be prepared to help where needed including to undertake certain domestic jobs within the setting.
9. To work alongside the manager and staff team to ensure that the philosophy behind the project is fulfilled.
10. To record accidents in the accident book ensuring the manager has initialised the report before the parent receives it.
11. To look upon the setting as a whole where your help can be most utilised.
12. Constantly be aware of the needs of the children to ensure every child is collected by someone known to the setting.
13. To respect the confidentiality of information received.
14. To develop your role within the team especially with regard to the key worker position.
Specific childcare tasks
15. Preparation and completion of activities to suit the child’s stage of development.
16. To ensure that mealtimes are a time of pleasant social sharing.
17. To ensure the washing and changing of children as required.
18. To provide comfort and warmth to an ill child.
19. To ensure the setting is of a high quality environment in order to meet the needs of individual children from differing cultures, religious backgrounds and varying stages of development.
20. To be aware of the high profile of the setting and to uphold its standards at all times.
21. To actively promote and support the safeguarding of children and young people in the workplace ensuring that the settings policies and procedures are observed at all times.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
22. To be prepared to undertake other duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the senior nursery nurse/manager.
23. The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

25. The post holder has a general and legal duty of care in relation to health, safety and wellbeing and must take all reasonable steps to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for themselves and for other members of staff, students and visitors affected by their actions or inactions. The post holder is also required to comply with all applicable health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.
26. The post holder must comply with relevant legal and financial policies and procedures and be aware of their responsibilities in terms of the legal requirements of their post.

Qualifications/Training
Essential
27. Level 2 in childcare qualification and willing to work towards level 3.
Desirable
28. Safeguarding certificate.
29. First aid certificate.
30. Food hygiene certificate.
Experience/Knowledge
Essential
31. Previous experience of caring for/or working with children ages from birth to five years old in a voluntary or paid capacity.
32. Knowledge of the national standards for the regulation of childcare provision.
33. An awareness of and some understanding of the importance of health and safety and food hygiene in the workplace.
Desirable
34. An understanding of the foundation phase curriculum.
