Offer description

A Vacancy at Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a candidate interested in a clinical fellow post in the department of haematology and oncology at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.

This job would be well-suited for a junior clinical fellow (FY2/IMT1/2/3 equivalent) who may be interested in a career in haematology or oncology and wishes to gain further clinical experience, develop relevant specialty-specific clinical skills and enhance their CV.

In addition to an excellent clinical experience in haematology and oncology there are many educational opportunities, regular protected structured teaching and opportunities to engage in service development and research projects.

As a department we have a reputation for developing trainees and several prior fellows have gone on to gain successful ST3 training numbers in both haematology and oncology.

The clinical fellow will spend time in shifts dedicated to the acute inpatient ward or day unit. There is no expected out of hours cover and the usual shift pattern will be expected to be 9am – 5pm.

Ward Duties

When allocated to the ward, the clinical fellow will form part of the ward-based acute inpatient team, with supervision from the haematology attending and on-call consultant, the oncology named consultant for any oncology patient, and the acute oncology service. These duties include the treatment of haematology and oncology emergencies such as neutropenic sepsis and new cancer work-up, and general haematology emergencies such as sickle cell crises. There is close supervision at all times with the ST3+ and consultants always available, full ward rounds taking place at least twice a week, and new patients and deteriorating or unwell patients seen by a consultant every day as required.

Day Unit Duties

The clinical fellow will be expected to look after patients on the day unit providing clinical review as required, either planned following discharge or ad hoc should patients develop or report symptoms on presentation, prescribing blood products and other medications and working alongside nurse specialists to ensure safe delivery of ambulatory patient care. The clinical fellow will be supervised to develop the clinical skills required to assess patients on systemic anticancer treatments by undertaking at least one telephone clinic weekly.

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in special measures; we’ve opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, was named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal in 2024.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.

The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.

Applications should be made online, however, queries regarding the application process, assistance with completion of the application form or if you require any adjustments (for applicants with a disability) please contact Ugonna Egbuziem, Recruitment Advisor, on 01708 435000 ext.5932
