Offer description

Overview

Historic England is seeking three new members for the Historic Estate Conservation Committee. The Committee advises the Commission on the stewardship of properties within the National Heritage Collection, as carried out by the English Heritage Trust. It fulfills this role through policy review and site visits to assess work in progress and the quality of work being done.

The Committee's remit covers building, archaeological and collections conservation, historic estate management and designed landscape conservation. Members are appointed to fill vacancies following retirements and will be expected to contribute their expertise to the Committee’s broader work.

Responsibilities

* Review the policies and practices of the Trust related to conservation of around 420 properties and, in some cases, curate internationally important collections.
* Participate in a programme of site visits to properties to assess ongoing work and review outcomes.
* Attend site visits across the country (approximately 6–8 per year) and contribute to writing the visit records; attendance is not required for all visits but a commitment to up to four site visits per year is expected.
* Attend formal Committee meetings (generally four per year, in London or on site) and share expertise with other Committee members and Historic England staff.
* Engage in occasional conferences and seminars to assist in Historic England’s strategic development (typically not more than one event per year).

Person specification / Qualifications

* Demonstrate an understanding of Historic England’s work, its environment, and a dedication to its aims and objectives.
* Knowledge of preservation and the conservation of buildings, monuments and collections, including in the context of the National Heritage Collection.
* Strong communication, influencing and persuading skills; ability to work constructively with fellow Committee members and external partners.
* Ability to represent their own area of expertise and to collaborate in Committee discussions.
* Willingness to contribute expertise across the Committee’s activities, including site visits and policy discussions.

Seniorities / Categories

* Seniority level: Mid-Senior level

Remuneration and terms

* These positions are not remunerated; however all reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
* The Committee typically meets four times a year in central London and makes 6–8 site visits per year.

How to apply

Please apply via the Applied Recruitment Platform. You will be asked to provide:

* Why being part of Historic England’s Historic Estate Conservation Committee interests you
* The skills, knowledge and experience you possess that are specifically relevant to your application
* How you have inspired change on a key issue within your working career in the historic environment
* A CV (personal details redacted prior to selection for interview)

Deadline for applications: 23:59 on 30 September 2025. Provisional face-to-face interview dates: 22–24 October, with a small field exercise. Appointments are made by the Chairman of Historic England following appropriate interviews and in line with the Government’s seven Nolan Principles of public life. Feedback will not be provided to candidates not shortlisted.
