Band 8a Specialist Pharmacist - Cancer Services

We're looking for a passionate and forward‑thinking Cancer Pharmacist to join our dynamic Cancer Services team at UHB as a Specialist Clinical Pharmacist. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred pharmaceutical care within oncology and haematology.

The Pharmacy Cancer Services Division at UHB provides world class cancer care to patients from across the country, with a range of specialised services in oncology and haematology including BMT and CAR‑T, delivered by a team of pharmacy specialists.

The team is at the heart of Cancer Services, ensuring safe, effective, and timely delivery of SACT, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to optimise treatment pathways, contributing to clinical governance, and supporting service development. Pharmacists are integrated into all aspects of the service including wards and SACT day units as well as working independently in clinics.

We support and encourage you to develop your own research interests and to develop yourself as a Specialist Clinical Pharmacist.

We hope you have a passion for education and training to support the growing number of junior pharmacists within the team.

There is an expectation that the individual will work across all UHB sites.

The expected interview date is 05/12/25


Main duties of the job

Ensure the cancer clinical services provided are of a high standard and that all prescribed medication is clinically verified in a timely manner.

Provide daily clinical pharmacy services to the cancer outpatient departments.

Work as a non‐medical prescriber in cancer outpatient clinics and prescribe ongoing anticancer treatment if appropriate and required.

Develop the cancer clinical pharmacy service and lead other Pharmacists and Technicians to deliver a high standard of pharmaceutical care.

Monitor and evaluate the clinical pharmacy service provided and provide feedback to team members.

Ensure safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of drugs in cancer patients.

Identify the potential impact of future developments on cancer clinical services and adopt a proactive approach to forward planning.

Lead and assist others with clinical audit work on prescribing standards, activity and practice.

Review and develop action plans from relevant NICE guidance.

To provide evaluated, pharmaceutical and financial information on medicines and to produce reports to the Cancer Services Division.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* *4 year vocational Masters degree in pharmacy (or equivalent)
* *Post‑graduate clinical pharmacy qualification or equivalent experience
* *Membership of the General Pharmaceutical Council
* *Willingness to work towards non‑medical prescribing qualification
* *Working towards Level I Faculty Membership with the RPS


Experience

* *Significant post‑registration hospital pharmacy experience in oncology
* *Possesses relevant clinical knowledge in oncology
* *Demonstrates good knowledge of oncology and current issues
* *Previous participation in multi‑disciplinary team
* *Demonstrates commitment and enthusiasm for providing high quality pharmaceutical care
* *Demonstrates good critical appraisal skills
* *Knowledge of national initiatives and guidelines, e.g. NICE, NSF
* *Possesses knowledge of available resources to answer Medicines Information queries
* *Able to work with drug budget information
* *Experience of teaching/presenting to other healthcare professionals/patients
* *Ability to manage budgets and deliver on cost improvement programmes
* *Previous involvement in clinical trials

* *Good communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels.

* *Able to work with all grades of staff -- clinical and managerial

* *Willingness to travel across all sites within the Trust as required by the job role.
* *Commitment to own Continuing Professional Development
* *Good teaching and presentation skills (variety of methods, individual and small & large groups)
* *Experience as a trainer
* *Experience of supervision, developing and appraising staff as well as giving feedback
