Overview

Research Assistant / Associate (Ecology) at The University of Sheffield. Salary information provided by the university; base pay range announced by the university. Fixed-term, full-time position funded by a Wellcome Trust Collaborative Award in Science, with collaboration across Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool and Dundee.


Responsibilities

* For Research Associate (Grade 7): take responsibility for effective decision-making in support of research, develop research plans, and manage day-to-day research tasks.
* Use data analysis and visualization to understand prospective biomarkers and identify relationships between them.
* Identify the most consistent, non-redundant, and relevant features for model construction.
* Select and apply appropriate techniques for predictive model development and validation.
* Develop reproducible analyses, curate code on repositories, and ensure data are securely stored and backed up.
* Prepare material for presentations and present findings at meetings and conferences.
* Draft publications and submit to refereed journals; prepare internal and sponsor reports.
* Coordinate with postdoctoral researchers at other sites and organise regular collaborative meetings.
* Supervise PhD, undergraduate and PGT students as agreed; advise on data analysis techniques.
* Be an active team member, support junior colleagues, and promote a collegial working environment.
* Develop contacts and collaborations within the School and wider research community; contribute to bids for future grants.
* Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

* Contribute towards drafting publications and submit to refereed journals.
* Contribute to writing of research and progress reports, and other reporting obligations.
* Coordinate with postdoctoral researchers at other sites and organise regular collaborative meetings.
* Support supervision of UG/PGT students as agreed and advise on data analysis techniques.
* Be an active team member, support junior colleagues, and promote a collegial working environment.
* Develop contacts and collaborations within the School and wider research community; contribute to writing bids for future grants.
* Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.


Qualifications

Research Associate (Grade 7) essentials: PhD in a quantitative biology discipline, statistics or machine learning; proven track record in statistical modelling or machine learning addressing predictive questions; proficiency in R or Python for statistical methods or ML; strong communication skills; experience working in a collaborative team; excellent data management and documentation skills; ability to analyse and solve problems with long-term implications; ability to manage resources and plan work; flexible with prioritising workloads.
Research Assistant (Grade 6) essentials: BSc or MSc in a quantitative biology discipline, statistics or machine learning; experience with statistical modelling or ML for predictive questions; proficiency in R or Python; effective communication and data analysis abilities; collaborative experience and good data management.

Other information: The post is full-time, fixed-term (available immediately to 31 January 2027). Salary scales vary by grade.
