Overview
Consultant Medical Microbiologist role at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. This is a substantive post in the Department of Medical Microbiology. The appointee will provide a comprehensive, efficient and cost‑effective clinical microbiology, virology and infection prevention & control service to the Trust, local General Practitioners and other users of the service including PHE.
Contract and duties
This post is for 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week plus 1 PA for microbiology on‑call commitments. The on‑call duty rota is currently one‑in‑five.
Primary responsibilities
* Clinical duties in general microbiology and related areas; liaison with clinicians, general practitioners and the local Health Protection Team regarding diagnosis and management of infections.
* Take responsibility for specific clinical areas on a two‑month rotational basis (e.g., critical care, neonatal, haematology/oncology, A&E; medical/surgical wards and admission units). Regular ward visits and support for cancer services; commitment to infection control and to the local Health Protection Team.
* Attend specified MDT meetings and participate in ward rounds, antimicrobial stewardship rounds, MDTs, and other clinical or audit meetings (including drugs & therapeutics and non‑infection control committees).
* Laboratory support: interpret reports, respond to telephone queries, and participate in the on‑call medical microbiology rota.
* Quality and accreditation responsibilities: supervise diagnostic methods, interpret results, contribute to policy and SOP development, ensure quality assurance and NEQAS participation, maintain QA and accreditation with UKAS, and contribute to business planning and future equipment/staff needs.
* Engage in the Consultant appraisal process and develop a personal development plan.
* Responsible for ensuring that critical incidents and near misses are reported into the Trust’s risk management systems.
Site and rotation
Consultant offices are based on site at Queens Hospital, with clinical responsibilities requiring rotation through both Queens Hospital and King George Hospital. Appointees will be expected to take an active interest in facilities at both locations.
