About the Opportunity
We’re looking for a Fire Hydrant Technician to join our dedicated team at Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service.
About the Role:
As a Fire Hydrant Technician, you’ll carry out the inspection, testing and maintenance of public fire hydrants across Staffordshire. Working closely with the Water Manager, your role will help ensure that hydrants are fully operational and meet national safety standards — supporting our firefighters and protecting the community.
What You’ll Be Doing:
1. Inspecting, testing and maintaining public fire hydrants to ensure they meet BS750 standards
2. Reporting defects and repairs through electronic systems
3. Clearing hydrant chambers, replacing or painting lids, and fitting caps and markers
4. Conducting flow and pressure testing
5. Using handheld tools and devices, including Toughbook laptops and service vehicles
6. Updating hydrant locations and coordinates
7. Maintaining vehicle and equipment condition and stock levels
8. Working outdoors in all weather conditions
What We’re Looking For:
Essential:
9. A full, clean UK driving licence
10. Experience using hand and power tools
11. Good communication and team-working skills
12. Able to work independently and use initiative
13. Physically capable of lifting heavy items
14. Competent IT user (including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
15. Strong record-keeping and administrative skills
16. Willingness to work outdoors in all weather
17. A commitment to health & safety and wellbeing
Desirable:
18. NRSWA Qualification (New Roads & Street Works Act 1991, Units 1–6)
19. Basic vehicle maintenance experience
20. Strong local knowledge of Staffordshire and ability to read maps
Training & Development:
You’ll receive full training and support to carry out your role, including internal courses and ongoing guidance from the Water Manager.
Equipment & Support:
A service vehicle will be provided, along with all necessary equipment. You’ll also be expected to ensure its upkeep and compliance with inventory standards.
