The post holder will work closely with the Maternity Quality and Governance Matron and team to ensure full implementation of risk management and effective practice for safe service delivery and maintaining clinical quality standards in maternity.
The post holder has an important role within the maternity service of coordinating the interface between women and families that use the maternity service and the Senior Maternity Management Team.
This role is to provide maternity cover.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work with the Maternity Quality and Governance Matron and the Senior Maternity Management Team to:
* Work with the multidisciplinary team to ensure a quality service that is responsive to the needs of service users
* Ensure that the Maternity Risk Management Strategy is effectively conveyed to all staff and is translated into operational practice.
* Undertake clinical incidents (including serious incidents), write reports of investigations, make recommendations, and ensure action plans are implemented.
* Review previously reported incidents and evaluate their action plans to determine whether recommendations have been implemented.
* Develop appropriate action plans to minimise risks, including resource implications, changes in clinical practice, and administrative procedures.
* Assist the Quality and Governance Matron and Maternity Project Manager in developing and delivering a programme to maintain CNST within Maternity.
* Utilise the Trust's information management systems and technology effectively.
* Assist in maintaining the Maternity Risk register by working with clinical staff to identify risks and conduct risk assessments.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will work with the Maternity Quality and Governance Matron and the Senior Maternity Management Team to:
* Act as a clinical role model, promoting professional standards and working closely with the multidisciplinary team.
* Participate in meetings within the service that form the maternity governance structure, including deputising for the Maternity Quality and Governance Matron when necessary.
* Be highly visible and approachable to staff, women, families, and the public to foster open communication and effective risk assessments.
* Be available to staff on duty to provide advice and support.
* Participate in the 24-hour managerial on-call rota.
* Handle relevant Freedom of Information requests.
* Support the delivery of the quality agenda through extended hour roles as appropriate.
* Work clinically as required.
* Develop Clinical Risk Management initiatives and strategies.
* Investigate serious untoward incidents thoroughly, using methods like root cause analysis, ensuring timescales are met and learning occurs.
* Ensure all required statistics are available for service, division, and trust reporting.
* Produce the Risk and Governance newsletter for staff learning and distribution.
* Audit practice following incident investigations and incorporate necessary changes into policies and guidelines.
General
All employees must maintain confidentiality, comply with the Data Protection Act, and adhere to health and safety regulations to protect women, babies, and staff. Regular appraisals will be conducted annually based on key responsibilities and the KSF outline.
Person Specification
Education and qualifications
* Registered Midwife eligible to practice
* Evidence of post-registration education at BSc level; relevant experience considered
* Evidence of post-registration education at MSc level; relevant experience considered
* Previous training in investigation and report writing
Experience and knowledge
* Substantial experience at band 7 or senior band 6 midwife level
* Knowledge of clinical governance and risk management at local and national levels
* Experience managing practice changes due to risk management issues
* Knowledge of the Maternity Governance Structure
* Experience in risk management investigations
Skills, abilities, and competencies
* Effective communicator, even in challenging situations
* Understanding of clinical guidelines and review processes
* Ability to produce a chronology of care
* Ability to meet deadlines
