About the Role
The Department of History will appoint an Assistant Professor in Environmental History on a full‑time, indefinite basis starting 1 September 2026. You will be part of one of the largest History departments in the UK, which has a thriving community of teachers and researchers across a range of disciplines and geographical areas.
Responsibilities
Teaching: you may deliver one or more of the following modules depending on your expertise:
* HI113 – Europe in the Making
* HI153 – Making of the Modern World
* HI2K2 – Imperial Natures: Environments and Empires from c. 1450 to the Present
* HI2K9 – Historical Research
You will also be encouraged to develop and propose new modules. You will supervise final‑year dissertations, support MA teaching, and conduct lecturing, seminar teaching, essay tutorials, office hours, marking of undergraduate work, monitoring of student attendance in line with departmental quality assurance, and act as personal tutor to an assigned group of undergraduate students, providing pastoral support and guidance. In addition, you are expected to conduct research in Environmental History or a related field, engaging actively in the department’s teaching and research programmes.
Requirements
You will need to demonstrate the following:
* Academic qualifications suitable for an Assistant Professor position in the UK, including a PhD awarded by the start date of 1 September 2026.
* Evidence of teaching and research activity in Environmental History, with a clear plan for future work that is fresh and exciting, and complements the university’s research strategies.
* Experience of supervising and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students.
* Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and a record of active participation in such initiatives will be preferred.
Special emphasis will be given to candidates whose work engages with oceanic history, energy history, animal history, and non‑Western, indigenous, or decolonial methodologies. We welcome applications from under‑represented groups and early‑career researchers from all parts of the world.
