The Opportunity
We are now seeking an exceptional Head of Commercial Underwriting to lead the development, performance and strategy of our Commercial Motor underwriting portfolio.
As the Head of Commercial Underwriting, you will take ownership of the P&L, product strategy, and technical governance across our Commercial Motor lines. You will drive growth, ensure underwriting rigor, maintain exceptional insurer relationships, and champion MeteorWrite’s values of integrity, cooperation and fairness.
It is a full-time, hybrid role (our office is based in Rochford) on a competitive salary depending on experience.
Responsibilities
* Deliver target loss ratios, volumes and cost performance in line with the MeteorWrite annual plan.
* Partner with internal and external providers to drive cost efficiency and operational effectiveness.
* Operational & Technical Excellence
* Act as MeteorWrite’s commercial underwriting technical specialist.
* Lead product development, ensuring underwriting footprint optimisation and market competitiveness.
* Responsible for the commercial motor trading performance and contribute to annual planning and portfolio management.
* Produce monthly underwriting MI packs and contribute to board and capacity provider reporting.
* Ensure products and pricing deliver fair value to customers.
* Manage insurer relationships and maintain strong underwriting documentation and policy wording standards.
* Leadership & People Development
* Support the development of a high‑performing underwriting team.
* Promote a culture of excellence, accountability and continuous improvement.
* Communicate commercial strategy effectively across leadership and supporting teams.
* Champion professional growth, personal development and competency development.
* Strategic Delivery
* Grow premium, profit, volume and retention via strong broker engagement and market insight.
* Ensure underwriting delivery aligns with MeteorWrite’s broader strategic objectives.
* Embed Consumer Duty principles, ensuring consistent good outcomes for customers.
What you Bring
* 10+ years’ experience in Commercial Motor Underwriting.
* Advanced knowledge of underwriting processes, contract structures, specialist vehicles and commercial motor markets.
* Experience of intermediary relationship management with strong business development and marketplace influencing skills.
* Proven ability to analyse complex information and make sound commercial decisions.
* Demonstrated leadership capability with coaching and mentoring experience.
* Proficiency with core business technology (e.g., Microsoft Office).
* Professional qualifications such as CII Advanced Diploma (or working toward).
