Chief Objective of Position: The Student Transition Coordinator(s) will support the successful student transition and integration into and throughout their time at Christopher Newport. The Coordinator(s) will provide intentional outreach and individualized student support, particularly to those navigating critical transition points and special populations, including transfers, commuters, student veterans, non‑traditional learners, first‑generation college students, and more. They will serve as a resource for new students on campus and report to the Assistant Dean of Students for Transition and Connection.
Work Tasks:
* Design, implement, maintain, and assess a variety of student transition functions, activities, programs and support services for undergraduate students, with a particular focus on new transfer students, commuting students, first‑generation college students, and non‑traditional student learners.
* Serve as a case manager for students of concern, providing individual student support and timely follow‑up of Captains Care referrals. This includes coordinating internal and external resources, on‑going communication, risk assessments, monitoring progress, and developing and implementing intervention plans.
* Develop a creative, comprehensive communication plan for specific audiences, including first‑year students, second‑year students, commuters, and student veterans to be implemented with Captains Connect.
* Assess student satisfaction and learning outcomes, evaluate the quality of service delivery to provide feedback on the student transition experience, and align programming with student success initiatives.
* Collect data and information to regularly assess trends and inform decisions, assisting with office‑wide assessment efforts and annual reports.
* Represent the Division of Student Affairs and transition support initiatives on select committees and working groups.
* Participate in university events that support the academic mission of the University, including but not limited to Orientation, Commencement, Move‑In, Admission events, and other special events.
* Work cooperatively with administrative units in Student Affairs, Enrollment, Student Success, Admission, Auxiliary Services and personnel affiliated with student success on university retention initiatives.
* Develop and maintain very positive and professional customer service and relationships within the office/department and with all constituencies, demonstrating a positive and professional attitude and treating everyone with dignity and respect.
* Review and communicate safety issues to assure a safe and healthy workplace and reduce work‑related absence.
* Act as a responsible employee with authority to redress sexual violence and duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's): Excellent interpersonal communication skills; highly motivated, innovative and creative; ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines; foster positive internal and external public relations; work independently and on a team; consult with faculty, administrators, students and families; work nights and weekends; lift and move objects; master a variety of computer applications, including spreadsheets and word processing; strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Required Education: Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s degree with work experience that equates to an advanced degree.
Additional Consideration – Education: Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs Administration, Student Personnel Development, or a related field at time of start date.
Experience Required: Experience in developing, planning, and executing programs; managing multiple tasks; working with students in a mentoring, coaching, or advising capacity.
Additional Consideration – Experience: Experience with student transitions in a university setting; customer service experience with a diverse population; advising and/or coaching students, facilitating workshops, information sessions, and intervention programs; managing departmental resources.
Salary Information: Starting at $50,887, commensurate with education and experience.
