Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated Nursery SENDCO (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator) to join our team. The ideal candidate will play a vital role in ensuring that children with special educational needs receive the support they require to thrive in our nursery environment. This position requires strong leadership skills, effective communication, and a passion for early childhood education. As a SENDCO, you will collaborate with staff, parents, and external agencies to create an inclusive atmosphere that fosters the development of all children. Must hold a minimum of Level 3 within childcare.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
1. Identifying and Supporting SEND
* Lead early identification processes for SEND, including observation and discussion with key persons and families.
* Oversee implementation of the Graduated Approach: Assess – Plan – Do – Review.
* Ensure high-quality, individualised support is in place for children with additional needs.
2. Paperwork and Administration
* Complete and maintain accurate SEND documentation:
* SEND Support Plans
* Review records
* EHCP requests and reports
* Submit relevant paperwork to the Local Authority within deadlines and statutory guidance.
3. Multi-Agency Liaison
* Act as the lead contact for external agencies including:
* Educational Psychologists
* Speech & Language Therapists
* Health and Social Care teams
* Attend professional meetings and contribute to coordinated care plans.
* Communicate effectively with professionals and families, including phone and written correspondence.
4. Funding and Resources
* Lead on submitting applications for SEND Inclusion Fund (SENDIF) and any additional support funding.
* Ensure funding is appropriately allocated to meet children's individual needs.
5. Care Delivery
* Provide reduced-ratio care and direct support to children with complex SEND.
* Model and implement inclusive practice and targeted interventions.
* Support key persons in delivering adapted routines and learning opportunities.
6. Planning and Curriculum
* Ensure inclusive, accessible curriculum planning in line with the EYFS.
* Advise on differentiation and targeted next steps to support children’s progress.
* Review and adapt learning experiences to meet individual needs.
7. Staff Training and Support
* Offer support and guidance to team members around inclusive practice and SEND strategies.
* Help deliver in-house training and CPD linked to SEND.
* Assist staff in creating and reviewing SEND Support Plans and interventions.
8. Policy and Practice Compliance
* Ensure the nursery’s SEND policy reflects current legislation and is implemented effectively.
* Stay updated with national/local SEND developments and guidance.
* Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding policies.

Experience
* A background in early childhood education or childcare is essential.
* Previous experience working with children who have special educational needs is highly desirable.
* Demonstrated leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
* Strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written, to effectively engage with parents, staff, and external agencies.
* A proactive approach to managing challenges and driving improvements within the nursery setting.
