Healthcare Scientist / Science Practitioner
Join the Sleep Service at Trafford General Hospital, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. This role supports the delivery of a high-quality sleep service across our main department and the Community Diagnostic Centre at Withington Community Hospital.
Main duties of the job
* Performing, analysing and reporting on in‑patient and outpatient sleep studies (including respiratory polygraphy, full video polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing and actigraphy).
* Initiating treatment with CPAP and following up these patients using agreed protocols in both face‑to‑face and telephone clinics.
* Teaching, training and mentoring of students and junior staff.
* Cover evening shifts on a rotating roster and travel to work at either Trafford General Hospital or the Community Diagnostic Centre based at Withington Community Hospital as service demands require.
Person Specification
Experience
* Willing to undertake further study
* Competent in setting up, downloading and scoring respiratory sleep studies
* Competent in setting up, monitoring and troubleshooting CPAP procedures
* Experience in teaching Sleep Physiology to University undergraduates and nursing students
* Experience in performing, scoring and interpreting full video polysomnography.
* Experience in performing, scoring and interpreting actigraphy.
* Experience of mentoring staff
* Experience of working within the NHS or similar Public Health Services.
* Experience of working night shifts
Qualifications
* BSc Biological or Physiological Sciences or Equivalent
* Registered with RCCP, AHCS or BRPT (or eligible for registration)
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
* Further Sleep Qualifications (RPSGT etc)
* Mentoring/Teaching Qualifications
* Evidence of participation in Research
Skill
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to use own initiative to coordinate, plan and prioritise work.
* Ability to work autonomously.
* Ability to keep accurate documentation.
* Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
* Good organisational skills, methodical, reliable.
* Skilled in use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
* Experience in medical electronic maintenance.
* Good knowledge of clinical information systems.
Knowledge
* A good understanding of sleep physiology and pathology.
* A good understanding of respiratory physiology and pathology.
* A good understanding of non-respiratory sleep disorders.
