This is an exciting opportunity to join the Environment Agency’s Natural Capital Ecosystem Assessment (NCEA) Programme as the lead for the Data Analysis & Statistics Work Package within the Data, Analysis & Digital Workstream. The Defra-led NCEA programme gathers comprehensive data on ecosystems, including freshwater, estuarine, and coastal waters, to assess their benefits for people and the economy—highlighting their natural capital. The evidence generated will support policy and decision-making by illustrating the true value of nature.
You will lead a team of data scientists and statisticians responsible for designing and evaluating NCEA monitoring networks and analyzing data to produce robust, nationally representative evidence on ecosystem conditions. You will coordinate team efforts and oversee technical delivery to ensure objectives are met and align with the programme’s goals.
Your responsibilities include:
1. Setting the overall data analysis and statistical approach for the programme;
2. Developing and managing the workplan for the work package;
3. Supporting the team in developing analytical approaches, resolving technical issues, managing risks, and maintaining high standards;
4. Collaborating with other work package leads to address cross-cutting issues;
5. Engaging with stakeholders within and outside the programme on data analysis and statistical methods;
6. Line management duties for the team.
The post sits within the Strategic Evidence Design & Assessment (SEDA) team, part of the Chief Scientist’s Group in the Environment & Business Directorate. We are a friendly, supportive team known for delivering key water environment insights. Working remotely and dispersed, we foster an engaging work environment.
**Experience/Skills Required:**
* Proficiency in R/R Studio for data visualization and analysis;
* Experience in designing monitoring networks and analyzing data with mixed models;
* Experience managing technical contractors;
* Strong team ethic, ability to balance workloads and risks;
* Excellent communication skills for leading, motivating, and organizing teams;
* Good organizational and planning skills, with the ability to prioritize under pressure;
* Initiative, flexibility, problem-solving, and risk-based decision-making abilities;
* Experience working with stakeholders and building relationships;
* Line management experience (desirable).
Development opportunities and training will be provided. The role is flexible in location, with some travel and overnight stays required.
