The Opportunity
We have a permanent Senior Geotechnical Engineer role to join our Consulting Highways team, based in our Belfast office. Our 130-strong Belfast Design Hub delivers local, national and international projects for clients including Department for Infrastructure Roads, Translink, National Highways, Transport Scotland and Network Rail. The multidisciplinary team covers Highway Engineering, Bridge/Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, River & Coastal Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Traffic Engineering/Transport Planning, and is the BIM Centre of Excellence for Amey. This ecosystem offers a one-stop shop for clients and opportunities for staff growth in a knowledge-rich environment with mentoring support.
Recent key projects include: £1bn A66 Northern Trans-Pennine (A66 NTP); £6m Lichfield Southern Bypass Railway Bridge; £50m Churchill Flyover PTSI and Deconstruction; Lifecycle management for the DBFO2 Network in Northern Ireland (M1, A4 and A1).
The Belfast Geotechnical Team
Our Ground Engineering Team in Belfast comprises 15 geotechnical practitioners, including Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists, playing a pivotal role on major and minor civil/structural schemes. Core services include desk studies/feasibility assessments, ground investigations, design of earthworks, rock slopes, reinforced soil, foundations, retaining structures and ground improvement schemes, geotechnical risk analysis and asset management. We also support tendering, health and safety documents and multi-discipline site teams during construction.
The Role
As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer you will support the Principal Engineer/Technical Director on a variety of ground engineering schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities include:
* Leading a team and delivering technically sound engineering solutions.
* Owning projects from quotation to handover.
* Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings and deliverables to meet quality, cost and programme criteria.
* Overseeing junior staff and contributing to their professional development as a Delegated Engineer.
* Liaising with client and supplier representatives, attending progress meetings and responding to queries.
* Managing a small, locally based single-discipline technical team and ensuring delivery of their workload.
* Contributing to bids and business development.
* Driving effective Health and Safety practices within the team.
What you will bring to us
* Chartered or Incorporated status with a relevant professional body (e.g., Engineering Council, Engineers Ireland, Geological Society of London).
* Experience and expertise in geotechnical fieldwork, gained in an engineering role or equivalent.
* Knowledge of technical reports procedures (CG 300 & CD 622) and design production in accordance with EC7 and NWR Standards.
* Understanding of rail earthworks asset management procedures (CIV/065).
* Ability to prepare and check deliverables to a high standard.
* Good working knowledge of relevant software/tools (e.g., Wallap, SlopeW).
* Commercial awareness and understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
* Experience in hazard and risk management on projects with appropriate mitigation.
* Understanding of interface management and alignment of deliverables across disciplines.
