About us

We are a small but well-established environmental consultancy based in the heart of the Waveney valley. Our varied project portfolios support a diverse range of clients from private homeowners, planning agents and architects to multi-disciplinary engineering consultancies, utilities providers, public sector bodies and wildlife charities. We provide bespoke consultancy services to support project planning and consultation, as well as specialist mitigation and Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) roles.

Role Purpose

To support the delivery of ecological consultancy services through assisting with surveys, data collection and report preparation, while developing the technical skills and experience required to progress to Ecologist level. This is a developmental role working under the supervision and guidance of Ecologists, Senior Ecologists and the Company Directors.

Key responsibilities

Survey support:

* Assist with protected species and habitat surveys (including bats, badgers, reptiles, water vole and GCNs)
* Prepare and check survey equipment, paperwork and electronic recording tools
* Attend site as part of survey teams and follow instructions from lead surveyors
* Liaise with landowners and clients as directed
* Liaise with colleagues to coordinate travel and logistical arrangements

Data Collection & Administration:

* Accurately record survey data in the field
* Input and organise data into spreadsheets and digital formats
* Review trail camera, thermal imaging and sound files and log key information
* Assist in producing figures and plans based on survey results
* Maintain organised project files and records

Report Preparation:

* Contribute to desk studies and background research
* Assist in preparing Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Method Statements
* Draft sections of reports under supervision

Mitigation & ECoW Support:

* Assist with on-site mitigation works and provision of Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) services as directed
* Follow species- and licence-specific method statements

Health & Safety:

* Follow all MHE health and safety procedures
* Use PPE as instructed
* Contribute to Risk Assessments
* Report hazards or incidents promptly
* Follow lone working procedures where applicable

Supervision

* Works under the direct supervision of Ecologists, Senior Ecologists and the Company Directors
* Not expected to independently lead surveys or author reports
* Receives regular mentoring and technical guidance

Essential Skills and Experience

* Honours degree in Ecology or related field (or equivalent)
* Full driving licence and access to own vehicle
* Eligible for CIEEM Membership
* At least one season of field survey experience (or equivalent)
* Proven written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to use IT including Microsoft Office
* Ability to learn and develop

Desirable

* Basic GIS Experience
* Knowledge of UKHab
* CSCS Card
* Experience of assisting with PEAs or EcIAs
* Working towards protected species licences

Progression Expectations

Typical progression to Ecologist within 18-36 months subject to:

* Demonstrated technical competence
* Ability to work independently
* Development of report writing skills
* Positive performance and professional development
* An operational need for a more senior postholder

Pay: £25,500.00-£26,950.00 per year
