If you are a band 5 looking for to develop new skills and enhance your knowledge in caring for patients requiring a higher level of care, then an exciting opportunity has arisen in the Enhanced Care Unit in Singleton Hospital. The Enhanced Care Unit based in Singleton Hospital currently consists of 6 beds, 2 for hematology/ oncology/ medical emergencies and 4 beds for post operative surgical patients. The Enhanced Care Unit offers a higher level of care from the general ward for patients who require some extra support immediately following their surgery, this may include invasive blood pressure monitoring or the use of low dose vasopressor for a short period of time. The Unit can also provide high flow nasal oxygen therapy- Optiflow support, acute non- invasive mask ventilation, invasive monitoring and cardiovascular support for 48 hours or pending transfer to Morriston Hospital.

The surgical patient may require anything from a 24 - 72 hour stay with us, whereas a haematology/ oncology patient may require our level of care for weeks. Through these different specialties and different surgical procedures each day brings new challenges and new opportunities to learn with our fabulous and supportive team.

Main duties of the job

Use of communication using different formats i.e., verbal, written and non-verbal, using appropriate tools when necessary. Preparing patients for theatre, receiving patients post op. admitting unwell and unstable patients from the hospital. Ensuring patients safety if paramount. Carrying out any procedures/investigations needed whilst in the unit. Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations. Adhere to Health Board Policies and Procedures. Whilst working within your NMC code. Assess the patients’ nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care in order to ensure the delivery of effective patient Care. Working with the MDT and where appropriate involve patients and carers/relatives. Safely Administer medication, ensuring that procedures are compliant with Health Board Policy. Develop own skills and knowledge and contribute to development of others whilst insuring mandatory statutory compliance .

Maintain confidentiality with sensitive information i.e. staffing, financial and patient issues. Record patients’ property ensuring that procedures are compliant with Health Board Policies and protocols and maintain patients nursing records to ensure information is accurate and up to date Research Development. Evaluation & Audit Take a proactive role in the management of risk. i.e. risk assessments, reporting incidents and near misses
