About Us

The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine brings together disciplinary strengths in biomedical sciences, clinical research and public health to improve human health. Our faculty encompasses world-class departments (from neuroscience and structural molecular biology to infectious diseases and population health), close ties with NHS partners, and a commitment to translational research and high-quality teaching.

The Hub for Applied Bioinformatics (HAB) is the Faculty’s focal point for computational biology, delivering bespoke bioinformatics support and training across genomics, transcriptomics, spatial biology and AI/ML projects. We co-lead the Applied Bioinformatics MSc, run practical workshops, and we recently partnered with KCL’s Spatial Biology Facility, an advanced centre equipped for high-resolution spatial transcriptomics and multiplex imaging, to turn large-scale data into actionable insights for both fundamental and translational research.

About The Role

We currently have an opening for a Teaching Fellow in Bioinformatics who will support the teaching and academic delivery of our Applied Bioinformatics MSc programme. The successful candidate will become part of a collaborative and experienced teaching team and benefit from excellent technical and administrative support.

Skills

The post holder will possess strong programming and data science skills, with demonstrated application in bioinformatics contexts. They will be expected to contribute to the effective delivery of teaching, learning, and student support by:

* Delivering and evaluating classroom and practical teaching across modules
* Designing and supervising MSc-level, computer-based research projects
* Supporting students with feedback, mentoring, and academic guidance
* Contributing to module assessment and continuous evaluation
* Participating in hands-on tutorials across different modules
* Designing and delivering training sessions for the Hub for Applied Bioinformatics (HAB)

This is a full time (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 1st October 2027.

The position is anticipated to begin around the start of the academic year in September, though there is flexibility if a later start date is necessary.

Please note that this role is primarily in-person, especially during the first semester of each year (September to December). Additionally, during the six-month probation period, full in-person attendance will be required.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential Criteria

* PhD qualified in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field
* Experience in teaching or training within higher education or research settings
* Proficiency in bioinformatics tools and methods, including scripting in R and/or Python
* Familiarity with omics data types (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics)
* Excellent organisational and communication skills
* Ability to work collaboratively within a team

Desirable criteria

* Experience developing course or workshop materials
* Experience with online learning platforms (e.g., Moodle, Kaltura)
* Experience supporting students or researchers from diverse academic backgrounds
* Familiarity with cloud-based or HPC computing environments
* Familiarity with AI/ML and current trends in bioinformatics
