Associate Lecturer in Science Reference: S79/25 Date of JD: May 2025 Salary (£): £30,000 - £39,495 per annum (plus £3,067 Threshold and £1,596 Deane Payment if applicable) Directorate: Curriculum and Information Services Unit: School of Engineering and Science Reports to: Head of School Engineering and Science Location: The appointee will be based at the Bangor Campus but will be required to be available for work at any of the College sites as required. Total Hours of Work: 0.65 FTE. The annual hours are 936, of which up to 538 for student contact time and the remainder for associated duties. However, the post holder will be required to adopt a flexible approach (including evening work) and to devote such time as may be required by the exigencies of the service. Work Pattern: Hours will vary to fulfil role. Job Purpose: To become a member of the teaching team in current courses of study and assist with future developments. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Teach on a range of FE/HE Science programmes, including Pearson BTEC Level 2, Level 3, HNC and HND. Teach on a range of part-time programmes as required. Develop resources for learning in the area of Applied Science. Participate in Staff Development Programmes. Contribute to and participate in marketing, recruitment, and other appropriate events. Participate in subject team meetings and in school team meetings. Contribute towards SERC economic development activities where applicable. Contribute to the co-ordination and organisation of educational visits and student exchange visits. Contribute to the development of new full-time and part-time courses at basic, further and higher education levels. Complete as required all administrative tasks associated with the lecturing post. Notes: This is a description of the job as it is at present constituted. The duties and responsibilities are intended to give a broad indication of the variety of tasks the post holder may be asked to undertake. In carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the post, it is expected that the post holder will do so in accordance with the College Ethos Equal Opportunities Policy and that in doing so the post holder will contribute to the discharge of Section 75 statutory duties and implementation of the College Equality Scheme. This is a post which is governed by The Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults (Northern Ireland) Order 2003. Before appointing anyone to this post, it is policy to ask for the relevant check to be carried out by Access NI. The College operates a no smoking policy and all staff are expected to adhere to this. All staff have a responsibility for ensuring that risks are managed at College, team and individual level. This process will include the assessment and effective control of all acceptable risk situations. All Budget holders will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of a balanced budget across their area of responsibility, including the delivery of any agreed cost improvement programmes. Staff will be expected to participate in staff training and development activities to update and enhance their own knowledge, skills and professional competence needed to fulfil the role effectively. Please note that a waiting list may be created from this post from which further appointments may be made should the same or a similar post arise within six months of the interview date. Please note such posts may be based at any College Campus. Selection Criteria: Associate Lecturer in Science Essential Assessment Criteria: GCSE English (Grade A-C) / Essential Skills Level 2 (or higher) in Communication; and GCSE Maths (Grade A-C) / Essential Skills Level 2 (or higher) in Numeracy, or NICATS Access Maths Modules; or already be recognised by the Department of Education for teaching in Further Education in NI. Hold a Degree in Science or a related area, OR Hold a qualification in Science or a related area which is at Level 5 or above on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) / National Qualifications Framework (NQF) for England and Northern Ireland. PLUS 3 years relevant industrial, professional or business experience Ability to deliver, mark and assess both practical science classes and theoretical modules of study Excellent administrative, planning and organisational skills Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and oral Desirable Criteria: Hold a recognised teaching qualification Have experience in using online learning environments and related learning technologies
