Finance Officer

Overview
The Finance Officer will be a key member of the Finance Team located in Barnsley, supporting the Trust’s Care Groups by delivering high quality, timely financial management services. The role will coordinate workloads to meet financial timelines and support team members with forecasting, costing, budget setting and expenditure analysis.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist the Management Accountants Team in delivering reliable financial management services to budget holders.
* Organise personal workload to meet all relevant financial deadlines.
* Support forecasting, costing, budget setting and expenditure analysis for Care Groups.
* Provide first‑line support to budget managers and contribute to financial reporting.
* Assist with the production of monthly management accounts and analysis of variances.
* Help oversee budgeting activities, including the preparation of year‑end forecasts and intelligence gathering for senior staff.
Essential Knowledge / Skills
* Band 3:
o Broad understanding of day‑to‑day finance functions.
o Clear verbal and written communication.
o Provide reliable, accurate, timely information.
o Basic Excel skills.
* Band 4:
o In‑depth knowledge of financial ledger operation.
o Good understanding of budget setting processes.
o Produce clear working papers for finance managers and budget holders.
o Understanding of monthly management account process and importance.
o Knowledge of external reporting and accounting policies for Annual Accounts.
o Develop good working relationships with budget holders and provide reliable, accurate information.
Desirable Knowledge / Skills
* Band 3:
o Advanced Excel skills.
o Customer service training.
o Understanding of financial ledger operation.
o Experience of simple costing and analysis for decision‑making.
* Band 4:
o Advanced Excel skills.
o Customer service training.
Essential Qualifications
* Band 3:
o Minimum of five GCSEs (grade 4‑9) including Maths & English.
o Studying towards AAT (intermediate level) or equivalent.
* Band 4:
o AAT equivalent experience.
Desirable Qualifications
* Band 3:
o Evidence of personal development.
o AAT or equivalent experience.
o ECDL.
* Band 4:
o AAT qualification.
o Evidence of personal development.

Essential Experience
* Band 3:
o Knowledge of finance computer systems and related finance areas (coding structures, petty cash, VAT, balancing and reconciling accounts/ledgers, payroll procedures).
* Band 4:
o Track record of day‑to‑day budget management, including detailed budget setting, monthly management reports, variance analysis, year‑end forecasts, intelligence gathering and simple costing.
o First‑line support to budget managers, systems development, financial capability and design principles.
Desirable Experience
* Band 3:
o Finance department experience using a financial system.
o NHS experience.
* Band 4:
o NHS Experience.
o Foundation Trust experience.
o Using Agresso system.
o Service line reporting experience.
Physical Attributes
* Band 3 & 4:
o Ability to undertake job duties and maintain satisfactory sickness record over previous 2 years.
o Valid driving licence with access to a car during the working day (reasonable adjustments for disabled drivers).
Additional Information
* Band 4 for the role (salary £25,760 to £31,157, depending on experience).
* Permanent, full‑time contract with flexible working.
* Location: Kendray Hospital, Doncaster Road, Barnsley, S70 3RD, United Kingdom.
