Senior Lead, Democratic Services, Civic and Elections
Permanent | £68,702 to £71,395 | Hybrid working

The Opportunity
An established local authority is seeking an experienced democratic services professional to lead its Democratic Services, Civic and Elections functions. This is a senior role within the Law and Governance directorate, working closely with elected members, senior officers and the Monitoring Officer to ensure the authority’s democratic processes operate effectively and lawfully. You will ensure the smooth operation of council, cabinet and committee meetings, support robust decision making, and help maintain the integrity and transparency of the democratic process. The successful candidate will oversee the teams responsible for:
* Democratic Services and committee administration
* Civic and mayoral support
* Electoral registration and the delivery of elections
The Role
* Lead and develop the Democratic Services, Civic and Elections teams
* Line management of approximately six officers
* Oversee a service budget of around £2 million
* Ensure council meetings and committees run effectively
* Provide professional governance advice to elected members
* Act as Deputy Returning Officer
* Support the Electoral Registration Officer
About You
* Strong knowledge of local government governance structures and political frameworks
* Detailed understanding of electoral law, registration law and committee administration
* Experience advising councillors and officers on constitutional and decision making processes
* Leadership experience with the ability to motivate, develop and performance manage teams
* Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with senior stakeholders
* The organisational skills to manage complex processes, tight deadlines and high profile meetings
Working Arrangements
* Hybrid working with approximately two days per week in the office
* Attendance at evening council meetings when required
