Vision Impaired Specialist Support Assistant
Salary: approx. £13,968 - £15,700 pa
Type: Permanent
Location: Based at VI LARP, Hanson Academy
Job Description:
We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to join our team supporting children with vision impairment at Hanson Academy, within the Local Authority Resourced Provision (LARP). As a Vision Impairment Specialist Support Assistant, you will help pupils access learning across their needs, including supporting transitions and developing skills for adulthood.
The ideal candidate will have a solution-focused approach to meeting diverse needs, including cognition and learning, social communication, medical and physical needs, and social, emotional, and mental health needs.
Through comprehensive induction and on-the-job experience, you will develop in-depth knowledge of the children and young people (C/YP). We encourage innovative approaches, including expanding the use of assistive technology like iPads and apps to facilitate learning and independence.
You must be able to independently administer medication (following training), support with personal hygiene, engage in manual handling, respond appropriately to medical needs, and access First Aid or similar training as required.
You should be comfortable supporting pupils in active lessons such as dance, drama, and sports, as well as in technology-based lessons involving machinery and devices, with supervision as needed.
Demonstrating mindfulness and independence in ensuring pupils’ health and safety across various contexts is essential.
Experience with Braille is desirable; training can be provided to develop this skill.
Please note that employment is through Bradford Council’s Children’s Sensory and Physical Needs Service, not directly with the school. While based at Hanson Academy, you may be relocated to other provisions if necessary.
