Hardware Engineering Manager – Electronics
Join a dynamic team at Thales UK where you will lead the design and development of advanced electronics solutions for defence and security platforms. The role is based in Glasgow with a hybrid working model (3 days per week on site).
Key Responsibilities
* Define and manage the hardware development cycle, ensuring alignment with project and system requirements.
* Customize the engineering environment, processes, practices, and tools to meet project‑specific needs.
* Allocate tasks, plan, prioritise and ensure clear accountability within the team.
* Participate in system architecture development and allocation of functions to hardware components.
* Occasionally act as Work Package Manager, leading bids, estimates and electronic solution consultancy.
* Provide technical direction, managing technical challenges and risks, and lead fault‑finding and improvement projects.
* Engage with multi‑disciplinary teams (systems, mechanical, software, safety) to develop optimum solutions.
* Develop junior team members, propose and implement improvements, and review peer work.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
* Proven experience in hardware development and engineering management.
* Strong understanding of the hardware life‑cycle from requirements to verification and validation.
* Excellent leadership, team management, communication and collaboration skills.
* Experience in electronics circuit design using schematic capture packages (Cadence, Mentor Graphics or similar).
* Experience across the product lifecycle from bid/concept through to system integration/qualification and support.
* Demonstrated record of delivering to cost, schedule and quality while driving innovative technical solutions.
* Experience advising, supporting and auditing multiple projects and resources simultaneously.
* Experience selecting innovative technologies, tools and methods and ensuring they hold traction within the team.
Desirable Attributes
* Product knowledge of lasers and cameras is an advantage.
* Passion for continuous learning and staying updated with advancements in electronics engineering.
* Knowledge of the Chorus 2.0 Design, Develop and Qualify the Solution (Hardware) Process Lifecycle, or an equivalent ISO9001‑compliant engineering management system.
* Level 6 Qualification in a hardware engineering related discipline (e.g., BEng(Hons) Electronics).

Flexibility
The role is based at the Thales site in Glasgow. While a significant proportion of the role may be carried out from home, on‑site attendance will be necessary for test, integration and other lab‑based work.
Security Clearance
This position requires SC Clearance. If you do not currently hold SC Clearance, you will be required to undergo, achieve and maintain it. SC Clearance generally requires 5 years of residence in the UK (a minimum of 3 years may be accepted in some circumstances, with additional overseas checks).
