University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
Please see below for a detailed job description of the role.
The Southampton Oncology Centre is one of the largest in the country, with medical and clinical oncology specialties, as well as a large haematopoietic stem cell transplant unit.
As a tertiary referral centre, we treat both common and rare tumours, making it an exciting and innovative place to work. The Centre has close links with Southampton University, a research facility on site, and clinical trials are a significant part of our work.
This post focuses on fulfilling the diverse pharmaceutical needs of the oncology centre to ensure an exceptional patient experience.
The Southampton Oncology Centre Pharmacy (SOCP), located within Platinum House, is open from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm (Monday to Friday) and 9.00 am to 1.00 pm on Saturdays. We also open on bank holidays (Monday 9.00 am - 1.00 pm). There is a move towards seven-day working.
The oncology pharmacy team provides comprehensive clinical pharmacy services to four outpatient treatment areas, six inpatient wards, and a clinical research facility.
We are seeking to appoint a pharmacy technician with a particular interest in cancer treatment to expand our specialist cancer pharmacy team.
University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching trusts, offering many learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.
Located on the south coast, with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs, and Jurassic Coast nearby.

Our cancer care pharmacy team plays an integral role in patient care through participation in ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings for myeloma and lymphoma patients, advising staff, assisting with admissions and discharges, and conducting audits. This role is fully supported by medicines management technicians. We seek an enthusiastic clinical pharmacy technician for 12 months, with potential to develop skills in screening and verifying outpatient SACT chemotherapy, and possibly in medicines management.
Cancer care services include four outpatient facilities: one for teenage and young adults, one for oncology, one for haematology, and a private patient suite. Our team clinically screens all prescriptions for systemic anticancer medicines and provides support and advice to medical, nursing staff, and patients. Some team members have prescribing qualifications and conduct patient consultations, assessing and prescribing treatments as specialists in their area.
The oncology pharmacy team manages the chemotherapy electronic prescribing system (Aria), which covers six acute trusts in the South Coast.
As part of the team, you will participate in a weekly rota of clinical activities, including screening prescriptions for outpatient systemic anticancer therapy, based on competency with full training provided.
UHS has an on-site outpatient pharmacy dispensing oral systemic anticancer treatments and supportive medicines, allowing the oncology team to focus more on clinical activities.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain broad experience in cancer care, including clinical pharmacy in outpatient settings, electronic prescribing, and commissioning. It is suitable for someone eager to develop a range of skills in a specialist setting.
We seek a pharmacy technician who is adaptable, enthusiastic about change, enjoys problem-solving, and wishes to make a positive impact. A caring attitude is essential.
Clinical training will be provided, and we expect a commitment to personal development, including self-directed learning and relevant training courses.
Experience in systemic anticancer therapies is advantageous but not essential, as development opportunities will be available.
We encourage personal growth through structured training and support, reflecting our commitment as a leading teaching trust.
