DEPARTMENT: Knowledge
REPORTS TO: Head of Knowledge, Insights and Research
Who we are
The Energy Institute (EI) is the chartered professional membership body for people who work across the world of energy. Our purpose is creating a better energy future for our members and society by accelerating a just global energy transition to net zero.
As a not-for-profit chartered professional membership body, we bring together expertise to tackle urgent global challenges. The EI is dedicated to advancing knowledge, skills, and good practice across the energy sector and beyond. The Knowledge team supports the EI’s members, other EI teams, and society with high-quality, science-based energy research and information.
Our values
At the EI we endeavour to find talent that will live and breathe our values. We pride ourselves on our values and show this through ensuring that we are inclusive by treating each other with care and respect. Our goal is to continually build trust through open and professional collaboration within and across all areas of the EI. At the core of all that we do, we continually strive to show our passion for making a difference not only within our own roles, teams, or organisation but within the wider energy sector.
Who we’re looking for
We are looking for a creative, user-focused Digital Knowledge and Information Manager to develop our collection of digital resources and deliver them effectively to a wider audience. You will be skilled in enhancing user experience, continually improving how people interact with and digest information resources. You will be tech-savvy and comfortable working with a variety of digital systems to design and implement these improvements. You will work closely with a variety of EI staff and other stakeholders to fulfil the Knowledge Service and wider EI objectives.
Primary responsibilities
Inform provision of resources through measurement and engagement: Evaluate what current and potential users want and need, and work with Head of Knowledge, Insights and Research to ensure our resource development is aligned with EI strategy and purpose. This engagement will be both active and via analytics:
* Monitor usage of resources we hold (both in-house and via external content providers), using analytics tools to identify and track use patterns.
* Engage with team members, advisory panels, EI members and other stakeholders to identify gaps in resources, areas for improvement, and other suggestions to enhance our service (see user experience below). Source up-to-date eLibrary materials and streamline content by archiving outdated materials as appropriate.
Improve user experience: In addition to what we provide, you will improve how we provide it. Use design thinking or other processes to evaluate Knowledge Service user journeys and generate ideas for improvement. Engage with current Knowledge Service users to inform these changes. Improvements may involve reviewing structure and design of our websites and collaborating with the Digital team to make them more engaging and intuitive to navigate.
Provide our services: The Knowledge Service is the principal point of contact for general energy queries coming into the EI. You will be responsible for managing the response process in a timely and courteous manner, ensuring accuracy and delegating responsibility to team members and other EI staff as appropriate. You will be the point of contact for the publisher Elsevier who publishes the Energy Institute’s two journals: Journal of the Energy Institute and Fuel and Energy Abstracts, assisting them as required with the provision of the journals. You will contribute to and deliver the internal weekly Knowledge Note of topical news and events to the rest of the organisation.
Promote our services: Increase the recognition of the Knowledge Service as a primary resource for science-based, timely, balanced energy information, both within the EI and amongst energy professionals and other stakeholders. Ensure that all members of EI staff are aware of the nature of the services provided by the team. Collaborate with colleagues in our External Affairs team to promote our resources and services externally via our website, social media and other digital platforms. Participate in Membership team university inductions to inform students and researchers of our resources and conduct webinars to inform members and non-members of our resources.
Manage our digital systems: A variety of digital systems underpin our resource delivery. You will have primary responsibility for the maintenance and improvement of these systems, to enable reliable, effective delivery of our resources to users. This includes gaining a deep working knowledge of our library management system, website content management system, and other related software packages, as well as the links between these systems. You will also be the primary EI contact for several external software and content providers, liaising with the providers to manage changes and troubleshoot issues as they arise. You will work closely with the Digital team to manage these systems and will attend internal Digital Transformation Group meetings as the Knowledge Team representative.
Team and budget management: You will line manage at least one staff member, assisting them with the maintenance and provision of the physical library collection when required. You will assist in setting objectives in line with wider team goals and conducting regular 1-2-1 meetings and appraisals to support their development and evaluate progress against objectives. You will actively participate in your own appraisals, team meetings and activities to meet your self-development needs.
In conjunction with the Head of Knowledge, Insights and Research you will agree financial and other targets, compile annual budgets for the team and ensure compliance with internal practice throughout.
