The Role


As an Associate IT Network Engineer, you will provide second line support activities to an existing IT system and assist with the network implementation for a new high-performance compute environment. These capabilities are critical to provide an analysis and modelling environment that supports key maritime programmes.

Day-to-day, you’ll develop your knowledge and experience, working on IT Network tasks, under the supervision of the technical lead, to support the delivery of projects

Your responsibilities will include:

1. Diagnosing and fixing network problems and hardware or software faults
2. Responding to technical support calls from end users. (2nd line support)
3. Setting up and installing new clients, networks and software and follow work instructions to change components
4. Installing updates and patches to software and hardware applications
5. Maintaining inventories of hardware and software and requesting replacements from logistics chain
6. Managing backups of networking devices and monitor network connectivity and accurately record event logs

Essential experience of the Associate IT Network Engineer:

7. Detailed knowledge and understanding of the design, implementation and troubleshooting of Hierarchical IP Subnetting, Routing protocols, OSPF and BGP
8. Knowledge of routers, switches and firewalls
9. Familiarity with core network technologies and infrastructure
10. Awareness of network architectures
11. Firewall configuration awareness
12. Experience working within an IT service desk/help desk environment

Essential qualifications for the Associate IT Network Engineer:

13. A degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience in role
14. Relevant Networking certification (eg. CCNA or similar)

This role is 37 hours per week based at Portsmouth.

Portsmouth Technology Park (PTP) is one of QinetiQ’s key facilities, focusing on advanced technology development and engineering services. It is dedicated to research and development, ensuring that complex systems are designed, integrated, and tested effectively to meet operational requirements. The facility utilises sophisticated modelling and simulation techniques to analyse and predict performance.
