Chelmsford City Council – providing services to local residents and businesses at the heart of the county – is looking for an enthusiastic Environmental Health Officer to join its Business Compliance Team.
Key Responsibilities
* Carrying out visits and inspections of premises, producing reports, making recommendations and taking appropriate action to improve and maintain conditions as appropriate within statutory provisions and procedural frameworks.
* Investigating service requests and taking appropriate action to resolve these in line with statutory provisions and local and national procedural frameworks.
* Taking appropriate formal action under the relevant statutory provisions, including the service of notices, orders or prosecution, gathering and submitting evidence and attending legal proceedings as necessary.
* Maintaining a high level of knowledge and expertise of relevant environmental health, food law and health and safety regulation and implementation, statutory guidance, policies and procedures (including maintaining the necessary competencies for the position within the framework of the CIEH CPD scheme).
* Maintaining the necessary food competencies for the position as required by the Food Law Code of Practice (and supporting guidance).
* Advising staff, businesses, public and Council members on regulatory compliance as appropriate.
* Managing and delivering effectively a demanding and varied workload and maintaining proper records as required.
* Participating in partnership working with other Services and outside agencies to facilitate and improve public health outcomes.
* Successfully completing competency requirements and registration with EHRB within 18 months of appointment (if not already held to meet the full requirements of the role).
Skills and Experience
* Possession of a Certificate of Registration of Environmental Health Officer's Education Board or willing to successfully register within 18 months of appointment.
* A degree or diploma in Environmental Health.
* Competent in accordance with the Food Law Code of Practice (England) and/or competent and previously appointed as an Inspector under the Health and Safety at Work Act, etc. 1974, or willing to achieve and maintain within 12 months of appointment.
* Full driving licence.
* Computer literate.
* Professional experience in food safety enforcement.
* Professional experience in health and safety enforcement.
* Experience of successfully managing a varied and demanding workload with minimal supervision.
* Effective verbal communication skills to be able to persuade and influence a range of people in a tactful manner.
* Ability to produce clear and precise reports and letters.
* Prepared to work outside normal office hours.

Salary: £36,189 to £44,361 per annum.
Contract and Hours: Permanent, Full Time, 37 hours per week (part-time applications considered).
