As a Controls Engineer Software Programming Engineer, youll develop, implement, and commission control software used in advanced combustion and environmental systems across energy, oil & gas, and industrial sectors. Your work will directly support safety, emissions reduction, and operational excellence on a global scale.

This is a hands-on role where your code leaves the screen and enters the real world powering systems that make industrial processes cleaner, smarter, and more efficient.

What Youll Do

As a Controls Engineer, youll be responsible for the full lifecycle of control system development from initial design to final commissioning for systems such as burner management, flare ignition, and vapour recovery.

Control System Programming and Development

Design and program PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems tailored to combustion and process control applications.

* Work with platforms including Siemens (TIA Portal, S7-300/400/1500), Rockwell, HIMA, or Honeywell.
* Produce all supporting control documentation including:
* User Defined Specifications (UDS)
* Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
* Test documentation and operation manuals
* Ensure clarity, traceability, and compliance across all written outputs.

Logic, Safety, and Interlocks

* Develop cause & effect matrices, interlocks, and logic diagrams to ensure safe and efficient control system behaviour.
* Participate in HAZOP, LOPA, and SIL studies and implement control strategies in line with safety integrity level (SIL) requirements.

Testing and Commissioning

* Support system testing at every phase including FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing), SAT (Site Acceptance Testing), and on-site commissioning.
* Troubleshoot control logic, communication errors, and field device integration both in-office and in the field.

Systems Integration and Communication Protocols

* Ensure smooth communication between systems using industrial protocols such as:
* Modbus
* TCP/IP
* Profibus
* Profinet
* Interface with third-party systems and field instrumentation as part of complete turnkey solutions.

Compliance and Standards

* Maintain strict adherence to key industry regulations including:
* IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 (Functional Safety)
* ATEX
* NFPA-85
* EN-746-2
* Deliver systems that pass internal and external audits with confidence.

Cross-Functional Engineering Collaboration

* Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and design engineers across local and international teams.
* Align software deliverables with hardware and system requirements from the concept stage through to delivery.

What Were Looking For

* Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial control systems or automation programming
* Proficiency with at least one major control platform (Siemens, Rockwell, HIMA, etc.)
* Degree or HND in Electrical, Electronic, Instrumentation or similar engineering field
* Strong understanding of PLCs, relay logic, P&IDs, and control panel layouts
* Practical experience in safety systems, logic development, and commissioning
* TV or equivalent functional safety certification
* Background in combustion systems or hazardous area design
* Familiarity with ATEX environments
* Experience in international project delivery and field-based commissioning

Other Requirements:

* Valid UK driving licence
* Willingness to travel internationally
* Must live within commuting distance of Stamford, UK
