Clinical Fellow for Medical Retina 2026

The closing date is 20 October 2025.

Applications are invited for the MR fellowships in Ophthalmology based at the John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford, from August 2026 for 12 months in the first instance.

Candidates should be post CCT or equivalent and wish to specialise in MEDICAL RETINA.

This post is suitable for doctors who have completed their training but seek experience in medical retina prior to obtaining a consultant appointment. It is not an approved training post. Candidates are welcome to visit the Department and are invited to contact consultant Dominik Fischer (dominik.fischer@ouh.nhs.uk) at the Oxford Eye Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, The John Radcliffe.


Main duties of the job

Clinical

The postholder's duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford but their presence may from time to time be required in other parts of the Trust, such as the Horton Hospital in Banbury. Besides clinical sessions, the typical timetable will include 1 admin session. The fellowship includes sub-specialty training in inherited retinal diseases, uveitis, and other rare retinal diseases. Fellows may have access to cataract surgery on extra-curricular lists depending on experience and availability. The fellows are involved in the training of nurse injectors to increasingly transfer the injection service to a nurse-led clinic. Regular weekly teaching sessions include retinal imaging, genetics and uveitis. The Oxford Eye Hospital is a tertiary referral centre for complex retinal pathology. The unit has an international reputation in the field of genetics, gene therapy, and retinal phenotyping and fellows will have the opportunity to develop and broaden specialist and research interests in these fields.

OUH Trust is a large world-class specialist teaching hospital providing secondary care for the whole of Oxfordshire as well as being a tertiary referral Centre. The services of the Trust are provided by four hospitals: The John Radcliffe Hospital, The Churchill Hospital, The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and The Horton Hospital in Banbury.


Job responsibilities

General

The post-holder will assume a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of his/her department. Office accommodation and secretarial support is available for this post.


Weekly Timetable

The timetable may be flexible and the candidate should expect that this will evolve with the needs of the service. A formal job plan will be agreed with the appointee and their supervising Consultant(s) on behalf of the Clinical Director / Medical Director.

On-call commitment

There is a formal on call commitment.

IMPORTANT GENERAL NOTE

The post-holder must take reasonable care of his/her own health and safety and any other personnel who may be affected by his/her omission. Trust policies and regulations must be followed at all times.

Annual and study leave arrangements must be co-coordinated within the SDU to ensure there is an acceptable level of cover.

Indicative weekly timetable includes:

* Several medical retina clinics including AMD, Vascular Medical Retina, VHL amongst other MR clinic
* 1 Eye Casualty session
* 1 Admin session
* 1 Teaching session

Cataract surgery is possible via weekend theatres, but this is optional and not included with the Medical Retina Clinical Fellow timetables.


Person Specification


Qualifications/Training

* GMC - Registered with a Licence to Practice
* General training in ophthalmology to specialist level or equivalent with MEDICAL RETINA experience
* CCT, CESR or equivalent
* FRCOphth/Part III/MRCOphth


Experience

* Demonstrate ability to conduct clinical and operative care in ophthalmology
* Demonstrate special expertise in the areas of sub-specialty of MEDICAL RETINA
* Higher specialist training in ophthalmology or equivalent


Skills and Knowledge

* Ability to organize and manage clinical workload
* To undertake effectively the role of clinical fellow in a large teaching hospital.
* Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills
* Evidence of ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels skills should be highly developed.
* Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
* Experience of routine clinical audit
* Knowledge of the organization
* NHS and the Government\'s agenda for its modernisation
* Interest in taking part in research projects
* Management training and experience

* Driving License
