Job overview

Main duties of the job

The Emergency Department (ED) is at the centre of the acute work of all Trusts. Emergency Medicine specialists are responsible for assessing and resuscitating patients with serious illness and injuries before their transfer to hospital wards or operating theatres. Other patients are assessed, treated and sent home for follow up and ongoing care with their General Practitioner.

Typical duties may include:

1. Resuscitation and initial management of emergency cases in a team.
2. Management of other patients presenting to the ED
3. Admission of patients to inpatient teams for further management.
4. Admission of patients to the AOU, their ongoing management, discharge and referral when necessary.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

5. MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
6. Foundation Programme 1 Completed
7. Registration with the GMC & Licence to practice

Desirable criteria

8. ALS Certificate
9. MRCP Part 1 or FRCEM Primary (Desirable)

Experience

Essential criteria

10. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of the patient as a central focus of care
11. Demonstrate broad clinical skills in the management of acute medical patients
12. Competence in basic clinical procedures Ability to prioritise clinical need
13. Understanding of the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection
14. Familiar with working practices in the UK

Desirable criteria

15. 6 month general professional experience at SHO level in UK

Maintaining Clinical Competence

Essential criteria

16. Evidence of maintenance of clinical and non-clinical skills
17. Understand the basic principles of Audit

Desirable criteria

18. Evidence of participation in audit

Communication & Interpersonal Skills

Essential criteria

19. Able to communicate effectively in written English
20. Able to communicate effectively in spoken English
21. Able to discuss treatment options with patients and carers in a way they understand
22. Able to work on own initiative
23. Well organised
24. Willing to take on responsibility
25. Ability to work as part of a team

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

26. Prepared to take part in all aspects of the post
27. Ability to travel between hospital sites

PPE requirements: Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust requires all colleagues to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with our infection prevention and control procedures.
