The Opportunity We are seeking a Street Lighting Engineer/Technician to join our national Intelligent Mobility (IM) team to support the delivery of an expanding project portfolio of lighting design services across the UK and internationally. This role will work to support the provision of technical advice and design services to deliver street lighting and electrical designs that are safe, efficient and follow good working practices to help balance the needs of the economy, environment and society. Whilst the ideal candidate has a minimum of 5 years street lighting design experience, we are interested in those who would also be keen to broaden and expand their skills and knowledge in other key areas of the IM business such as urban, inter-urban intelligent transport systems and tunnel services. Training and mentoring will be provided if the candidate is seeking the development of their career across a range of interesting and challenging disciplines. Maintaining road safety during hours of darkness is often at the forefront of implementing lighting. As designers we deliver external lighting designs that provide the right light in the right place at the right time to support energy reduction, meet de-carbonisation targets and to ensure that environmental impact is minimised. This is often achieved through the use of intelligent control and integration with other technology systems that are deployed on our roads and streets. Is this role for you? The role will require undertaking the modelling of lighting designs using both luminance and illuminance criteria, preparation of design drawings, schematics and schedules. Compiling technical specifications, BS 7671 calculations, impact assessment and undertaking risk assessments and fulfilling CDM design duties. The successful candidate will undertake a range of roles either forming part of a larger team delivering major projects or be the designated lighting specialist for smaller projects to support their development in leadership and developing into senior roles. Key Responsibilities Provide technical support to the existing IM team through project delivery and leading technical input for small lighting projects Enhance Arup’s profile with key clients, including the Department for Transport (DfT), National Highways, international clients, and private-sector clients Support and lead to ensure delivery of projects within agreed timescales and budgets, driving teams to deliver technical excellence Contribute to a wide range of projects and bids across business areas and within the wider Arup network, including international opportunities Ensure all designs and documentation meet the highest professional standards Keep up to date with industry and technical developments and changes Perform a variety of design roles and technical consultancy Work with IM leadership to support the develop and implement a work winning plan to create a case for team growth in the UK region Requirements Minimum of HND or BSc in a STEM subject Desirable ILP Diploma in External Lighting Member of relevant professional institution(s) Working towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status, support will be provided in gaining accreditation Good working knowledge of BS 5489 and BS 7671 Experience with Lighting Reality and other lighting design packages Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD Understanding of DMRB & MCHW suite of specifications and guidance notes What we offer you At Arup, we care about each member’s success, so we can grow together.
