The role supports the R&D Operations Manager with approving, maintaining, amending and closing research projects at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, learning about clinical research management in a large acute hospital setting.
Main Duties
The R&D Office manages all research projects from feasibility review to trial closure. The facilitator provides administrative support for up to 500 active projects, ensuring compliance with legislation and guidance.

Job Responsibilities
* Act as the first point of contact for researchers, guiding them through the R&D application processes.
* Use web‑based electronic research databases such as EDGE and NIHR ODP to enter, update and retrieve project information.
* Support investigators, research nurses, trial coordinators, Clinical Research Network staff and external Clinical Research Associates to ensure full trial documentation sets are available before authorisation.
* Organise and manage application submissions efficiently.
* Communicate with ethics committees, R&D offices, investigators, multidisciplinary teams, pharmaceutical companies and other research organisations.
* Liaise with the R&D Finance team to ensure Clinical Trials Agreements are in place and studies are fully costed before approval.
* Identify and apply governance checks and administration tasks for studies, including contract type and Statement of Events.
* Maintain R&D study files in line with Trust SOPs, ICH‑GCP and other regulatory requirements.
* Draft and issue Trust Approval letters/emails and disseminate copies to all relevant parties.
Person Specification – Essential
* NVQ Level 3 in a related subject or equivalent demonstrable experience.
* Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office and web‑based databases.
* Good telephone skills.
* Previous demonstrable experience working in a large clinical setting.
* Good written and verbal communication skills, fluent, clear and effective at all levels.
* Ability to learn quickly and retain knowledge.
Person Specification – Desirable
* Proven knowledge of medical terminology.
* Understanding of medical research processes.
* Demonstrable experience working in an NHS environment.
