Overview
We are seeking a Head of Finance to lead financial strategy, governance and performance across a civil engineering organisation. The role provides commercial and strategic financial leadership, supporting operational delivery, capital investment and long-term growth across complex engineering projects and contracts.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead the organisation’s financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting and long-term financial planning.
2. Act as a trusted commercial partner to senior leadership and operational teams.
3. Provide financial oversight of major civil engineering projects, frameworks and contracts.
4. Ensure strong cost control, cash flow management, risk management and margin performance.
5. Oversee financial governance, controls, compliance and statutory reporting.
6. Lead project financial performance including cost-to-complete, change control, claims support and profitability analysis.
7. Develop and maintain robust financial reporting, KPIs and performance dashboards.
8. Support commercial decision-making, bids, tenders and investment appraisals.
9. Identify financial risks and opportunities, driving mitigation and value improvement.
10. Lead, develop and manage the finance team and external advisors.
Skills & Experience
11. Senior finance leadership experience within civil engineering, construction or infrastructure.
12. Strong understanding of project-based accounting, contract models and cost management.
13. Proven experience in financial planning, forecasting and commercial analysis.
14. Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills.
15. Strong leadership capability with experience managing finance teams.
Desirable
16. Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
17. Experience supporting bids, tenders and commercial negotiations.
18. Knowledge of NEC, JCT or similar contract frameworks.
19. Experience in change, growth or transformation environments.
