Science at Uppingham Community College

At Uppingham Community College the Science curriculum across key stage 3 and 4 provides students with the opportunity to develop their scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It enables them to develop their understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of scientific enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them. This then equips them with the scientific skills required to understand the uses and implications of science today and in the future. This and future generations will be tasked with finding solutions to the problems of a rapidly changing climate, increasing demand for finite resources and a decline in biodiversity. We are committed to innovative and reflective teaching based on thorough planning, adequate resource provision, and the sharing of expertise so that we can constantly seek to improve the quality of education for our students. At Years 7, 8 and 9, teachers are committed to teaching across the three subject boundaries. As students progress through the school, the specialism of staff in the different subjects become increasingly important in helping the students understand the different subjects within Science and prepare them for GCSE. Science at GCSE follows the AQA specification with a considerable number of students entered for the Separate Science qualifications and students also entered for the AQA Trilogy specification. Students receive 6 one-hour GCSE lessons each week, 2 lessons dedicated to each specialism. At UCC Science is taught from 7 purpose built classrooms. Our team of 5 full time and 5 part time teachers are supported by a team of 3 Science technicians, including the Senior Science Technician and a designated teaching assistant.

The College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and all posts are subject to DBS checks. In the interests of safer recruitment, the Trust may carry out online searches on shortlisted applicants in compliance with the guidance set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE). Any relevant information found with regards to a candidate's suitability to work with children will be discussed at interview.
